Modernizing Your Stock Prowler Radio for $39.95 - Mike Mas

On my quest to buy a Prowler - I found myself walking away from a number of beautiful cars when the last owner “butchered” the dash and the original wiring to install an after-market radio.

This event not only distracts from the beauty of the original interior, it also lowers the cars re-value. It’s just so wrong to see a big 7” LED display dominating the Prowlers dash! For the most part the radio in the Prowler is a good powerful system, so you don’t need extra power or amplifiers.

While I wanted some extra features like Bluetooth and Pandora for music, I wasn’t going to change the original looks of the dash. As an alternative, I opted for a Scosche hands free “Bluetooth FM Transmitter”. For those who are not up to speed on this technology, its fairly simple. The way it works is it acts like a miniature radio station to transmit to your radio.

The Scosche Hands Free Device Works perfect and streams music from apps like Pandora from your smart phone to the radio and it sounds even better than a FM station since the signal going in is digital and a strong analog signal is coming out. Aside from its great performance, you also have the capability to “Skip” songs, with the few buttons on the display.

Another plus is you can make and receive “Hands Free” phone calls on the device and listen to the phone on your Prowlers car speakers.

The device is also equipped with a USB fast charger, so in the event you need to top off your phone battery, just plug it in and your good to go.

The piece retails for $49.95. I picked up mine from Wal-Mart, which sells them for $39.95. It takes just minutes to select the frequency you like to transmit on (preferably one that is not used) tune in that station then pair the device to your phone and start enjoying some good sounds.

In Conclusion - When I installed my vertical doors I had to replace my bad door speakers so now my stock radio sounds great. Having the Bluetooth device allowed me to remove the CD player behind the passenger seat so it slides back a bit further. That extra space is now a new home for a mini tool set.

Enjoy - Mike Mas

Richnew41I'm happy that you are happy with your decision to upgrade your audio system Mike. That said, I completely disagree with you on your assessment of an aftermarket 7" display... It can be accomplished tastefully, in a way that looks like it came form the factory.
fvee25I installed a JVC double din w/no cd.
Shallow chassis made it easy.
Just modified the existing
opening.Wiring was a snap.

Rich thanks for the reply - Sorry if I offended anyone, that was not the intention. There's nothing wrong if an owner wants to upgrade his radio. I just wanted to mention it will affect the value or possible the sale of the car to a die-hard collector.

What I was referring to was dozen or so cars that I seen to include a some pretty SSR's, where the installers cut out and enlarged the radio opening on the dash which I consider a butcher job, they should have found a set that fit the opening. In addition, I've seen the back panel and door panels destroyed as well.

The scope of my post was for anyone wanting modern features on their original Prowler radio to keep the stock look and have Bluetooth and a hands free option.

Thanks Mike

Richnew41Not a worry Mike...

It may not be for everyone but I'm proud of my mods and very proud of my rendition of an audio upgrade... All by my own hand accept for Gary's front chroming which I removed and installed myself... The tach is my creation as well and was modified from what normally goes on Harley... All mods for the exception of the front suspension can be switch to stock in minutes...

The sound would knock your socks off...

garysssI agree Rich, your Prowler looks great. Most of us on POA bought them to use them, not as a investment. Many people bought them new as a investment and never used them, it did not work out to well for them. I don't think I will live long enough to see a big profit on my Prowler's.
Richnew41Thank Gary!!!...
A better pic of the rear deck...

viperkimThanks for the info, for us non tech people that's a great way to get an updated radio system
