MusCatHello POA! I have been reading your posts for several weeks and would like to say thanks to all of you who have been so helpful to others.

I am looking to purchase a Prowler and have been trying to gain an education on/about the vehicle. How can you take a vin number and find out which unit it was on the production line. For example a 1997 with a vin of 1P3EW65F7VV302173 means what? I don't know how to interpret it or cross reference them. Any help?

Also what is your opinion on collectability. First year, last year .... any comments?

ed monahanThe VIN numbers were shared with VIPERS. In other words, if the last four digits on a Prowler were 1234 the next Prowler was not necessarily 1235, that could have been a Viper. Supposedly someone got a list of the 97 Prowler VIN numbers and they may see this and respond. The other fact that you know is that the cars did not necessarily go down the line in numerical order, anyway. 1234 may have been assembled AFTER 1235.
The Woodwards and Black Ties were numbered on the pin stripe and these have nothing to do with the VIN numbers, either, as they were painted in random order.
ed monahanOops, collectability. Mine are the most valuable, lol. You will gets lots of opinions on that one, also.
There were (approx) 153 Woodwards and 161 Black Ties, 301 Deep Candy Reds (the Last color) produced. There are a couple of other cars that were the test color cars floating around also.
The 97s have a cast iron engine, everything newer has aluminum. The 2000s started the softer suspension.
You can read a VERY INTERESTING story if you look on the main menu and selct the Prowler story and also Stats and Facts. VERY informative.

I've read the main story three times already. Great reading but it left me with more questions! You mentioned the cast iron engine. What impact does that really have to the vehicle other than weight?

Since I'm not a collector I don't have the in's and outs on what's really important for collectability.

Georgia ProwlerIn my opinion the cast iron engine was a bad choice (too heavy) and the aluminum seems to have much better torque. I "kept" a 97 for a buddy while he went overseas in the military. My 2001 puts his in the dirt....don't know if this is consistant with all 97's or his may just be a dog.

ed monahanThe 97s have less horse power. I am not a collector and did not buy the car as an investment. I drive it and figure I will be dead or too old to enjoy the big windfall anyway. I would not attempt to give you advise on collectability.
My son keeps buying 70 and 72 Cutlasses and I think he over pays EVERY time and then he makes a bunch of money on them so I figure I don't know Jack.

Check Digit: to protect the consumer from theft and possible fraud the manufacturer is required to include a Check Digit at the ninth position of the VIN. The check digit is used by the manufacturer and government agencies to verfiy the authenticity and official documentation. The formula to use the check digit is not released to the general public.

bbcarOn the driver side with the hood open look by the hinge and you will see a paper tag with a number on it . That is the production order number.

My car does not have the paper tag but it could have fallen off years ago.

Any Prowler bought and cared for will be worth something, someday. I don't believe any year/last year, will be worth any more, JMO. Condition and miles seem to prove out my sightings.

If you are looking at a specific cat,,,,run a CarFax report and take the VIN to a DC service department and have them run a service report on the vehicle to see what, if any, repairs have been done to the car. Normally, if the previous owner is/was a POA member,,,,,the car probably was better cared for. On the other side, if the car was previously a rental unit,,,,,I'd stay away from it.

bbcarI got the info of the tag off this site a long time ago, but from what I have read today this is the tub number. I am assuming the tub being the main body? And by the way I would be glad to run against any 99 or newer Prowler as my 97 is definately no slouch, it will go sideways off the line and do a minor version of sideways on the 1-2 shift.
As with all cars some will be a little faster and some a little slower, but I do not think haveing a iron block hurts anything but a little weight. Also just having a second person in the car makes a difference in performance and I think that is because of the lack of torque. Also the horsepower and torque figures on the 97 are rated at a much lower rpm than 99 or newer cars and makes me wonder if it had been rated at the same rpm as a 99 or newer what the hp and torque numbers would be.

It looked like this (photo taken in 2001)...not sure what the Production order number actually means. This is the tag that was on my November 1998 production date car. Does the number indicate that my car was Prowler number 2,380 to be built?

I think in November on 1998 they were making an average of 14-18 cars per day.

My 1999 was made on February of 1998.

ed monahanAbout 4000 total (97 & 99) by the end of the 99 production year.
The end of the production year was July or August?
1700 made from November until July or August? Which means less than 200 a month.
I don't know any of the answers. I guess it is possible.
Chromer's was early November or late November? When was the last 99 produced?
16 per day for 22 days per month is 352 per month.
10 per day for 22 days is still 220 a month.
I am not disagreeing with you, Phil, I don't know. I hope someday we can all find out, just for curiousity's sake.

I was at the plant one day when they had just gotten their first shipment of Candy tubs. I commented to one of the workers that one of those was mine, but would I know which one? They told me that the tub numbers did not match your vin number. They explained that they just pulled a tub and assigned it to a vin number.......so they don't match.
