ATPOver the last two weeks I hear a clicking/knocking sound from the engine. The sound mimics the speed of the engine. The faster the revs, the faster the sound. I can go a few days without hearing a sound but find that on longer drives it usually appears. I have about 55,000 miles on the car. Any thoughts on what it could be? I am assuming it is piston related. This educated guess is from someone who spent over an hour looking for the transmission sensor location so any help is appreciated. Thanks.
catfishrockerarm slap at startup.when pressure builds it goes away.sounds like you have something different,.

beachcatI think you should stop driving it and have it diagnosed. That sounds like something that could get very expensive if you just ignore it. JMO
dskattAre you sure the noise is internel? If your car is a later model, it has a clutch on the alternator. When mine went out it made a noise like your describing.
catfishsounds like youre saying its not a continual noise,if it was a bad internal engine part it wouldnt come and go.needs to be diagnoised.maybe a frt output shaft bearing.do a search, theres lots of info on that bearing and what the noise it makes sounds like.let us know the outcome.

ATPThanks for the replies. Will let you know the outcome.
catfishhope its not the output shaft bearing, its a expensive fix for a 40.00 part.you must pull the engine to get to it,or move the driveline from the frt bellhousing back.a very poor design.around 500.00 to 600.00 to replace that part.

ATPSorry for the delay. Found the problem(s). The oil was low. Lesson, never believe your gauges. My oil gauge never registered the problem.
catfisham i missing something, the oil presure gauge doesnt tell you how much oil is in it.the oil pressure really wont change much unless it 3 quarts low or more, how low was it.

------------------

Greg and VetaGuess people don't check the oil level on the dip stick like they used to.

My kids have older high mileage cars that probably burn some oil and I am constantly reminding them to check the oil.

catfishif the oil was that low that the engine was making noise, that isnt good.

wqqdiesI'd be interested in Catfish's comment on this quote from my dealer in November 2009: "Noise from rear of engine sounds like the fly wheel prop shaft bearing" and, on a separate Estimate of Repair, "Replace rear bell housing cover with bearings - labor $1,635 - parts $1,790 - subtotal - $3,425 - taxes $533 - total $3,958". Work was not performed on advice that it might be many thousands of miles before the problem would be a real issue; car has been driven 6,000 miles since that time and has never gotten worse and, in fact, the noise seems to come and go in intensity. The main reason I chose to hold off on the repair was the high cost vs the possibility that the problem would never become more serious. How valid is your estimate against mine from 3 years past?
catfishyour being way overcharged.replace the frt output shaft bearing.part ,the bearing is all you need.bearing about 50.00 about 1000.00 to 1400.00 to change it.alot of labor.sometimes the noise from bearing will get louder.but it usually stays the same,i wouldnt worry about it,unless it gets really loud.

ATPlow enough that I am surprised the car still runs.
