waynec I have let the Prowler sit too long. Any way to drain the fuel tank or do I need to siphon from the tank?
StingRay How long is "too long"? Did you have Sta-bil in the tank at all? Siphoning may be the easiest, although, someone with knowledge of where the pick up hose is may offer an alternative to siphon. Good luck.
waynec No stabil. I must purchase nasty fuel with alcohol and this does not age very well. I have a lift at my house and searched for a drain but could not find one on the tank bottom so I thought i would ask. I have manuals but there is no ref. there either.
catfish there is no drain on the tank,i would use stabil.no additve will screwup the complete fuel system.

MattG Back to the initial question, how do you remove all (or as much as possible) of the gas out of the tank? Can I siphon from the fuel filler opening?
TLRandall No way to siphon from the fuel inlet. There is a restriction before the tank that does not allow a tube through. About the only way to do this is to remove the fuel pump and use a siphon pump from there.
ed monahan If it has been sealed in the tank, without air getting to it, it is probably okay. The 10% alcohol added tends to eat into the rubber parts but the gas probably didn't go bad.
Did you attempt to fire it up? If not, give it a try and go top off the tank with the best gas you can find, which will help dilute the old gas.

I spent an hour or 2 reading threads here and elsewhere about fuel pump replacement, etc... since I found none on removing the fuel from the tank.
So, in summary to get the gas out of the tank I need to:

1) bleed the pressure off the fuel system at the fuel rail under the hood.
2) pull back the trunk liner and remove the access cover that is under the liner on the drivers side.
3) carefully unplug the elect connections and 2 fuel hooses.
4) mark the fuel pump assembly cover so as to get it screwed back in to the same position and then unscrew it with the special spanner wrench.
5) remove the white plastic canister containing the fuel pump.
6) Pump the gas out
7) replace the fuel pump assembly, etc
Should I get a new gasket for the fuel pump assembly cover?

TLRandall When I emptied the Purple, I did not disconnect anything from the pump, just lifted it to the side a little, enough to feed the siphon hose through. I inspected the gasket and it looked great, so I was able to reuse it.
One thing to note - the ring is very tight to remove and must be tight when replacing. I thought there was something wrong it was so tight. Also be careful not to cross thread the ring when replacing, take extra care to get screwed on correctly. The silver car took several attempts to get the threads started, it just did not want to go on straight.
MattG Thanks again. Great info as it makes things easier... :-) If the tank is pretty full, is fuel going to leak all over the place when I unscrew the ring?
TLRandall No sir, I didn�t see that as any issue in either car.
Being safe, had a fire extinguisher handy and did it outside!
Tomcal Two additional ways to remove fuel from tank.
1- At fuel rail test port, attach a hose with correct fitting and use cars fuel pump to push gas out of tank into a gas can. Ignition switch to "ON" position to start pump. DO NOT start Car.
2- Disconnect fuel output hose from fuel pump at tank. Attach new hose at outlet and into a fuel can. Use cars fuel pump to push gas out, similar to above. Ignition switch to "ON" position. DO NOT start Car.
Depending on how much gas you have in tank, you may want to turn off fuel pump a few times to let pump cool down. Pump is cooled by fuel, but it doesn't hurt to have a few cool down cycles.
If you use this method, DO NOT drain down more than to 1/4 to 1/8 of tank. You don't what to suck up any junk near the bottom.
Typically draining down to 1/4 and filling with fresh fuel will dilute old stuff to a safe point.
If you plan on removing pump, be sure to replace with updated "Square" O-ring. Part # 4581239. Lubricate Square Ring with oil or light grease before installing pump.
Tony Goertz Tomcal - Fuel pump will only run for 2 or 3 seconds...
If you want to use the fuel pump � pull the fuel pump relay and just jumper the terminals to run the pump.
