BradleyGCheck engine light, AutoZone pulled code P0505.

Ran fine for awhile, then dash lights started flickering.. Like an intermittent short. Shut it off and it would not start. there was no power from the battery. Cleaned battery terminals and retightened them. NOTHING. Kept trying the key and Magically it restarted. No engine light..

Headed for home and within a mile dash lights begin to flicker and engine light came back on. Drove it on home and now, I get no power when I turn the key on. HELP!!

idiveIdle air control motor circuits - a shorted or open connection detected in one or more of the idle air motor control circuits.
Did you get Autozone to print the code out for you? That will usually show various causes that can help with diagnosis.
beachcatThis sounds scary Brad. I can't help you but I'm rootin for ya.
BradleyGThanks Roger, It scares me too. Planning my first Prowler trip in 2 years and I don't want to miss it.

Mickey.. Yes I got the print out. It listed:
Idle speed lower/higher than expected.
Vacuum leak on engine
Dirty throttle body
IAC motor defective
Poor electrical connection to IAC valve.

Where is the IAC valve. With the short being intermittent, I'm afraid it could be a wire chafing against metal somewhere.

phil2237Have a mechanic check the harness where the ignition switch is plugged in, sounds like a bad Ignition switch.
beachcatmy manual says its at the rear of the intake manifold plenum on the throttle body. its below the throttle position sensor. They both have electrical connectors coming out of them.
idiveIAC is located at the rear of the intake manifold plenum on the throttle body.
alrtgBradley,

I looked up code P0505 and it says that it is time to sell the Black Tie to ALRTG for $5.00 including repairs and free delivery to Maryland.

Disclaimer: I could have misinterpreted the code.

Seriously though, I hope you find the problem and resolve it so you can make your trip without any worries.

xtreme prowlerThis what I was thinking also..

BradleyGThe story continues...

The Prowler sit all weekend while I was away. NOW.. I can't make the engine light come back on. I had an appointment this morning at the local dealer to check it out. My understanding is that without the engine light on, they can't diagnose it. Is this true??

I have never had an issue like this before in 86,000 miles. I plan to drive it every day this week (About 200 miles in Dallas traffic) to see if it comes back on. If not... Do I dare drive it on a 2000 mile road trip? I want to go to the NHN real bad. What do you think?

Jim KenneyMy cat acted the same way just before I left on the Power Tour this year.
I replaced my battery and haven't had a problem since.

I'm assuming a short or dead ground across one of the cells was causing the problem.

Thank you for the input here and in PM's. Decided to take it to the dealer anyway. If you have anymore thoughts, I'm sharing this thread and PM's with the Technician at the dealership this afternoon..

idiveThe tech can pull up old codes and issues that occur when the light doesn't come on, but if you disconnect the battery, they will only be able to go back to the battery disconnect.
TFischerBrad: I had close to the same thing with mine. Ended up being the positive battery cable rubbing on the frame back up under the foam behind the battery. Also had to replace the battery. Took care of it and I haven't had an issue since. I also found the wire loom was getting chafed (as Jan has talked about in the past) on the passenger side firewall behind the side panel. I pulled it out a little, reconfigured the hangers and retaped the wires. Just a thought. T

I had the same experience as Tami,,,back in 2001, and reported the problem/situation on a post. Positive wire as it bends downward at battery, a wear hole developed on the underside of cable and corrosion within created a problem.
Chrysler would not replace positive wire loom cable,,,,seems a $800 cable plus labor was out of the question to replace. Patch job, shrink tube fix, and no problems since,,,,,,,,,,,but I still wonder.

BradleyGUPDATE.

My car is at Dallas Dodge where the Viper/Prowler technician, the electrician and the shop foreman have come to the conclusion that we need to add an extra ground strap between the battery and the frame. The shop foreman had seen this same problem before and that fixed it. I'm not too sure this will fix it, but they are the experts and have all the books.

Tami and Larry, I moved the battery cable to assure it isn't rubbing on the frame a long time ago, but I will be checking the cable routing on the passenger side and also where Sheriff Tom had some problems a year or so ago. Jim, I just replaced my battery in April(My original lasted 10 years). Phil and Jim, They checked the ignition switch and it is OK.

This issue only happened one day for me and did not reoccur in the next 50 miles of driving, but while at the dealer, they had the problem of it not starting, but it did not throw a code or check engine light.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I really appreciate it.

Andria, You did like so many other people when they quote the bible. You stopped after one verse and didn't go on to read the rest of the diagonals. You know.. The part about me taking your decked out silver with the awesome underhood show along with your Dad's BlackTie on October 4, 2011. So, you may want to reread that verse.

TFischerGood luck with it all Brad. Are you working with Linda at Dallas Dodge? I was thrilled to hear that she was back at a dealership again. I need a couple of things done on the Challenger so will be taking it to her one of these days.
BradleyGOnce again, the experts know what they are talking about. They noticed the ground cable was warm when cranking the engine over. They added another ground cable and after more than 200 miles, at least 20 on and off with the ignition switch and it hasn't missed a lick or acted up at all. The check engine light never came on for them and the code had cleared before I got it to them.

Thank you all for the suggestions and well wishes. I am very confident in the Prowler doing well on our road trip, so look out NHN because here we come.

A BONUS came with this issue. I FOUND NEAL NORTON. As you may remember Preston Chrysler closed more than a year ago. This is where our Dallas Prowler technician worked. Neal Norton. He is now at Northrich Automotive in Richardson, 1315 Executive Drive, West. 972.669.9990. I stopped by to visit him and the shop is large (about 20 bays)with a few high end vehicles in their shop. If you want Neal's cell number, PM me.
Neal it was good to visit with you and thanks for resetting my computer... It is running great.

beachcatGreat news Bradley! Prowl on!!!!
TFischerExcellent - glad you got it figured out. Glad you found Neal also and thanks for the numbers. T
