Nafitep3Thanks for the many posts about alternator problems. I'm big foot from atlanta. Backround is 1968 on car mech in spare time. Airplane mech from cessna 150's to Boeing 747, 777 etc.. worked for the largest airline in Atlanta. Reason for post. My prowler is 01. alt went totally out. It has clutch. After looking at the M/Maunel there was no way i was taking the steering reserviou and side bar down. It's not necessary. 3 fasteners out of side panel. take 6 fasteners out of top cover. swing 2 cross over bars out of way. Push radiator forward and keep it there. Take hood open/close sensor out of holder. Remove bracket on back of alt. 2 bolts out of alt and loosen tension pulley. Done. now for the alt clutch. it was not working. Line drilled using hangar machine shop put in bolt through both sides for balance concern. As was noted here the solid made pulley is to noisey for my liking. figured it would be OK but no its to loud. Removed my modified alt and put in remanded from rock auto (200.00) replacement- worked like a champ.
robinSounds like you're back up and running great job.

401KATActually the steering reservoir justs slips out of bracket and lays over...bars swung out...top rad plate out of way...alternator will slip back and up....no need to remove side panel...had to do it twice...2nd time 16 min...lol...jim
401KATthe one I bought http://www.ebay.com/itm/263651697195?ViewItem=&vxp=mtr&item=263651697195
Nafitep3401 I agree panel off not necessary but at almost 70 I wasn't going to be bending over that long. With 3 bolts holding the side panel it was just easier to take off than reach INTO bay for the back alt bracket mount.
I know it says newbie next to my name but I have been a menber since at least 2010 or 11?

Nafitep3With only 3 bolts holding side panel-- no way i wasn't taking it off. My point of the post was if I had followed the MM i would still be out there working on it. Who writes these things?
