bjprowlerMy A/C belt broke and I have a replacement but haven't installed it yet....Is it easier to replace it from beneath the car or should the shroud over the radiator be removed?....Any special hints? I don't have a belt tension guage...can I get by without one?
catfishchange it from the top.remove upper rad support and relace belt.ck other belt also.if one went the other one may be close to going also.manual says ok to have vertical cracks, not horizontal one.save yourself some work and replace both.i forget cause its been awhile since i replaced mine,i think the a/c belt is behind serp belt,so you would still have to remove serp belt.all i can say is w/o guage, get it as tight as you can.after a month or so retighten again.when it comes time to retighten you can do that easily from underside.also if you have a lft, before removing upper panel ck. to see if its easier from the underside to change them, might be.since i dont have a lift, i did it from the top.good luck.

bjprowlerThanks Catfish...I figured you would know....And thanks for the good advice to change the serpentine belt while I'm at it. You're right, the A/C belt is behind the serpentine, so it has to come off anyhow....
catfishreally crank hard on the tension bolts when reinstalling, and i mean hard.i tightened mine last time w/o a guage, the belt has stayed on so far.

drbuttonI just bought my 99 Prowler with cracked AC/serpentine belts. Now the local Chrysler dealer admits they have never worked on a Prowler and tech is two days into "really fighting with this car" and unable to replace belts yet. I am concerned, what should I do?
ALLEY CAT",,,tech is two days into "really fighting with this car" and unable to replace belts yet.

Are you sure its a tech working on your car,,,,or the wash rack/oil change kid who dropped out of high school?

3.5L engine is common in many Chrysler/Dodge models built,,, and if they can't figure that out,,, take your car to another repair shop immediately

catfishthe ac belt should have a tension of 150 ft lbs or it may throw the belt, serp should be 180 ft lbs.sounds like you shold take to another shop.

padrooThose belts should be easy to change for a real mechanic.
RPLUnless you have a Paxton supercharger.
1buddycChange it from the bottom. I had mine come off and wrap around the moving parts while in Indiana on a cruise at Larry Bell's Event 2 years ago.
I have replaced them from the top before in my Garage at home with all the correct tools but being on the road, I wasn't interested in doing it myself.
I took my car to the nearest Chrysler Dealership and they replaced the belt and had me on the road in under 40 minutes! I asked how they did it so fast and the mechanic (though not a specific Prowler or Viper Mechanic per se), said he did it from under the car. AND he got all the belt tensions correct. I've driven the car another 2500 miles since it was replaced and haven't had any problems since.
Best part was, the total bill was only around $85.00!!
Larry LordVery easy to change from the bottom.
