Steve.in.RoanokeOut crusin Sat. w/ top down & decided to drop her down into manual mode to let my friend, first time in a Prowler, get a feel for the exhiliration.

First to second and rounded a curve, there sits State Police. Officer starts running towards the Prowler yelling and flailing his arms. I stopped, as I knew there wasn't anything I'd done illegal, except rapid acceleration, still was under the speed limit.

Seems the officer was writing up an accident and really had a case of the a... He's yelling slow down, and on and on. My friend says quietly to me well it really sounded like you were going faster than you were.

I let the officer vent (he was going to do it anyway) and went on my way.

And the object lesson here is... it's not always what you are, or aren't doing, it's the "perception" that matters. Sounded and looked badd...

Reminded me of my younger days, when I had dark hair

Bob Miller Good story. Think those Virginia state troopers are bad? Try the Fairfax County police here in northern VA. They shoot and then ask questions later. They recently killed a young 30 something professional, no drugs, no alcohol, unarmed guy who was cooperating with police in broad daylight. He was standing next to the police car when he got wasted by the officer. Fairfax county police refused to release the officer's name. An investigation revealed no wrong-doing..what a surprise. Fairfax County police said it was an "just an accident." No charges, no suspension, nothing! I know the vast majority of police at all levels have to deal with the absolute worst in human behavior and it's sure not easy. But the Fairfax county police have this "gotcha" "I'm Mr. Macho" persona they like to project.

If I ever do something wrong I'll just say, "oops, it was just an accident, so it's ok." This area is really outraged for sure.

TLRandallThats why I have worked for a Sheriff instead of a Police Department or State Police. The Sheriff is elected by the people he serves. If they don't like the way he or his Deputies are doing their job, out he goes at the next election, and most of the time, his Deputies go too! We basically get rehired and resworn every four years. You have a different outlook on how you deal with people when your future is tied to the ballot box.

Interesting, I didn't realize that's how it worked.
Attitude & approach is everything.
Most law enforcement folks are really great people, but there are always a few who just "don't get it" -or- who've had "a bad day" -and- hey, it happens to us all...

Bob MillerThanks T.L.! Good info.

I'm sure that putting up with the general public day after day has to really wear on an individual. But you're absolutely right, accountability is the key in any profession.
