Thank you for the information Prowlen.

I installed the Zoncar lights. They look great. I have not even used them yet. Just tested them in the garage.

Your post has me scared shitless. I'm pulling the LED's and putting halogens back in. I'm not chancing anything.

If anyone is more gutsy than I am, I bought 8 packages of these. 4 are still in the plastic, never opened. I'd throw in the other 4 for free since they were installed, but never used.

Follow up,
Maybe it's not the LED bulbs? I considered that I had never felt around under the hood before after driving and didn't have anything to compare with the temperatures I was observing.
So, after a 5 mile round trip today in 80 degree weather and not using my headlights, I felt around the same areas. Above the headlight housings, cover screw heads, engine side pannels, and the long cross bars above the engine. All very warm to pistol hot!
I'm assuming it is all normal engine compartment heat from the Prowler. My temperature gauge reads normal, mid range, even with spirited driving. I'm sure there are a lot of other owners that can speak to the normal engine temperatures and heat dissipation under the hood.
I don't want to be the guy crying wolf on these LED bulbs and seeking others experiences and observations with LED headlights and engine compartment heat. Prowl on!

I took the cat out last night and drove for 3 hours with headlight high and low beam on to test it out with LED replacement. When I got home pop the hood and check the areas and the headlights you stated were hot to touch. Honestly, I don't feel that way, it was warm but I believed it was mostly from the engine heat not from LED.
I am happy with the LED at night, much better than stock.

No! Sorry but I must disagree on the use of these ZonCar 9005/HB3 light-bulbs in the Prowler.

I had high hopes for these lamps based on the many positive reviews and believing that the technology had came a long way in the past 20 years as well.

The specs are impressive, and they look great on paper.
Advertised as compact size 1:1Halogen Replacement Kit, Plug and Play, Can-bus ready, built-in Driver, and have a 12,000 rpm "turbo cooling fan", with 15,000 LM, 42-watt output, and 6500K Xeon White light spectrum.

What's not to like? They are awesome, bright white and really give a modern updated look to the Prowler. The before and after comparison is night and day. I was loving them.

As previously mentioned, I installed these in my 2016 Ram Sport projector headlights a couple of weeks ago as well. 9005's in both low and high beams. Look great and the high beams are awesome on dark country roads. The great specs and compact size being the attractive features for the Ram, being able to fit them under the dust covers with no modifications, plug and play is great. Finally a bulb that fits.

Now I'm concerned about those as well. Like the Prowler, the Ram has sealed projector beam housings with no ventilation. But the lamps have the turbo cooling fans and should be fine?? Will maybe, I'm still monitoring them.

So, here's my experience with the Prowler after the installation last night. I installed these in the low beams only and was quite impressed with the difference and the look. Awesome I'm thinking. I do a brief check on the garage door for beam pattern and height adjustment. It appears a touch high but anxious to road test and decided to drive around the Lake. Less than 2 miles. I had idled in the driveway for about 5 minutes and stopped at the park for some quick photos, idling another 5, and back to the garage. Before calling it a night I feel the tops of the headlight housings. Wholly crap, the top painted surfaces of the housings are piping hot. Not just warm but uncomfortably hot. I pop the hood and feel around checking for temperature and heat dissipation. The black headlight covers are extremely hot above the low beam bulb locations and the covers screw heads are nearly burning hot to the touch!

I expected some heat as normal with the Prowler, but my alarm bells are going off as "not good" and uncomfortably warm for such a short test drive. Maybe they would be fine long term, but my common sense is telling me to remove these hot puppies before any damage occurs. Thinking a longer drive down the Interstate could lead to a disastrous meltdown!

I don't do much night driving so I'll leave them in a while longer and reassess them, but pretty sure they have to go, or move them over to the high beams.

Also, on the Prowler low-beams, what I thought to be aimed a little high on the garage door was actually disappointing output on the road. Only a couple of car lengths illuminated ahead with the feeling they were aimed too low. I will experiment with aiming but thought they were dialed in pretty close.

I did like the cool blue led dash lights and followed suit. Very cool look. Quite a process getting to them, but doable with some patience and finesse. The tachometer took a special bulb and the foot wells illuminating cool blue add a nice touch.

For now, as much as I love the look of these LED headlights, I would not recommend them for the Prowler.

Also, important to note ZonCar's fitment guide for the Prowler are for high beams only on Amazon's site. Same for the Ram.

Maybe some LED's with less wattage and lumens wouldn't get so hot, otherwise back to some premium halogens soon.
Prowl on!

I have been driving the 97 a little more and since it gets dark so much earlier, I am using the headlights. So far, so good and they do work GREAT.

I was getting all excited about putting LED'S on my Kat after seeing all the pictures and comments however, I've also seen all the concerns about the heat the LED's generate. I'll have to wait and see some more trial/Error before more ahead. However, they do look sharp on the Kat's. Oh I saw where the website says it comes with a 9005/HB3 so is that a High/Low LED set. Just want to confirm in case I order some after I see the results from everyone...

The high and low beams are interchangeable. They use the exact same bulb. They make a huge difference.

Did mine before going to WV. Didn't do much night driving there except to the Walmart 10 mile away. Checked each time and can tell you there is not excessive heat.

SO much better than the old bulbs that were in there.

A little late to this thread but infrared thermometers are relatively inexpensive and give accurate temp readings of surfaces. Hot engine compartment- lights on and off tests could help with concerns. Got the gun to check the working condition of the cats on my 15yr old pickup but I think it would work well for this also. Best of luck!

I just looked up the ZonCar 9005/HB3 LED Bulbs and they draw 42 watts each. A popular replacement bulb is the Sylvania Silverstar Ultra 905 halogen bulb that draw 62 watts. Watts is a measurement of power used. E X I = P. Voltage times current equals watts. There should be no problem with excess heat using the ZonCar LED if I did my math correctly.

Been several years, have not had any problems or heard of any problems. I have bought and sold some Prowlers so I going to update the newer ones.

I couldn't find ZonCar. I ordered some from Amazon. I put them in last night but haven't really driven after dark with them. Huge difference in the garage.

Rimthin 60 Watts, 16,000 Lumen, lifespan 50,000 hrs.

I don't recall the price, but pretty cheap.
