Today I noticed a noise coming from the back of the car when down shifting to first. I noticed it when coming to a stop and thought it might be the rear brakes, but I was able to make the noise happen by stopping the car and putting it in neutral, then into either Drive or First. The sound only last about a second and does not happen in any other gear that I could tell. Ideas? This message has been edited by dskatt on 02-19-2012 at 07:37 PM |

Sounds like the transmission solenoid, which is normal. Sounds like a buzzing noise. |

That may be correct, but why has it gotten so loud? |

Don't focus your attention on every little squeak or buzz. This transaxle has 100% electronic clutch control. You may be hearing the trans oil passing at high line pressure thru the PWM solenoids. They may swoosh or whistle a bit. If you haven't had your trans fluid flushed yet I recommend it. Even if you have low miles the oil degasses and looses important additive packs. The Chrysler dealer will hook up a heart lung machine to the cooler fitting lines and then pump out the old oil as the new is pushed in. This assures 99% replacement. About $120-130. Don't go to any back yard shade tree shop. After that put on a 24 inch sweet thunder replacement muffler and run wild in the streets!! |

I have 60,000 miles on the car and have serviced the transmission as recently as a few months ago. The solenoid switch may very well be the noise I'm hearing, but I have never heard it before, so IMO something has changed. Is this an indication that the switch is about to fail and should be replaced? |

The fluid level is good. According to the recipient they used ATF-3. |

Until a part actually fails, or can be tested to determine that it is about to fail, I'm afraid there is not much you can do. If you can find a good Chrysler Transmission Technician he/she may be able to road test the vehicle to see if they feel something is amiss. You can open a can of worms with that path if some one wants to sell you parts or repairs you really don't require. Good luck and keep us informed of any updates! |

They should be using ATF4 and not ATF 3. http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000138.html |

Ed is correct. I checked my invoice from last year and it states ATF4. It may not be the end of the world. I don't have access to my manuals right now, but ATF3 may have been the factory fill back then. |

The shop I used is IMO a reputable one.I stopped by and talked to the owner and he said the ATF +3 indicated on the receipt was an error. He said they only have ATF +4 and did not use +3. He asked me to bring the car in Monday and he would check it out. It's running fine right now with only the slightly audible ( normal) solenoid noise. When I heard the louder noise last weekend it was after I had driven 120 miles. This message has been edited by dskatt on 02-24-2012 at 07:36 PM |

I brought my car to the shop and the verdict is nothing is wrong. The transmission test out perfect. No codes, good pressure, smooth shifting etc. For some unexplained reason, the solenoid pack decided to get a bit louder then it has been. The shop said replacing it was unwarranted at this time. So next time out I'll drop the top, crank up the tunes and won't worry about it! |
