Try moving the stearing wheel left to right. Sometimes if there is pressure on the wheel, you can't get the key out. Good luck.

Wild Thing,

Which shifter knob do you currently have on the car? I have one of the flame ball shifters from Real Rod Bob and at times I know I have to be sure the ball is fully engaged in park so the detent latches to release the steering column / key. If you recently changed the knob it may be slightly off and not allowing the detent to fully engage. Be certain that when it is in park it has fully engaged. I am at work right now so no way to check my shop manual for any adjustment on this. Hope it helps..

If the key does not rotate fully back to the lock position,
it will not come out. It happened to me. Pull the chrome
shifter cover up and you will see at about the 11 O'clock
position, a shift lock cable that has come loose from the
fork, re-insert cable. You may have to turn key to on position and move shift lever to accomplish this. Once reconnected, you can put it back in park and rotate key
to the lock position and remove. I put a dab of rtv on
the fork to prevent it happening again. Hope this helps.

There are 4 tabs on the bezel around the shifter. You can use a credit card to push them in and not scratch the chrome. Other folks have had the cable slip out of position.

If you do have the flame ball shifter, (sounds like you do) pull up on the ball, this engages the detent fully..mine sometimes sticks and if it does not pop up, it will not allow the key to release.

well guess what had to take panel off under steering wheel?
and then spray linkage. as soon as touhing it the key disengage back.

weird so cleaned out and sprayed it.
so hopefully this is it, must be from sitting.
so if anyone else get's in this situation you know what else to check for.
