When I bought my Kat 3 yrs. ago it had 29,000 miles on it. My first stop was at the Dealer for servicing. I told him I wanted all fluids and filters changed. They returned it along with a hefty bill and a smile. Flash forward to a few days ago. I had wanted to repeat the procedure since it had been 3yrs. and 18,000 miles ago. The Dealer I had been using is no longer in business as of 3 weeks ago so I went to, of all places, a Honda dealership. The manager is a golfing buddy and he told me of a Tech. at his shop that was very good, so I gave him a try. When he returned the car yesterday he told me some disturbing news. The transmission fluid was filthy and had never been changed! Apparently the CERTIFIED Chrysler Dealership with the CERTIFIRD Prowler Tech. had ripped me off! Not only that but they may have damaged a truly unique car! Watch Out! |

I have heard of people taking in their own fluids to use and they will SAY they used them but really didn't. Unfortunately, ya have to stand there and watch them. |

At times this may be the result of a technician "pencil whipping" the repair for whatever reasons (fully business sponsored, to cover for time spent goofing off, or because there is too much work). Furthermore, routine maintenance on vehicles sent to the shops for servicing is typically done by the junior technicians. In some cases, these technicians are required to provide their own tools. Since they typically make less than their more senior counterparts, their tools can consist of something like two pot metal crescent wrenches they got at the flea market, and a combo screwdriver that would do better service as a scalpel, than removing hardware from your car. Although you might find a shop that is owned by a reputable person, you are always at the mercy of the person doing (or just reporting) the actual accomplishment of the work requested, and the quality of the job they do is directly proportional to the quality of the tools they use and experience they posses. IMO: Certainly on any specialty vehicle .... it is better to do it yourself (or as a distant second choice ... have it done by someone you know very well, 'and' is actually doing the work) so you know it's done, and done right. I guess that because the Prowler is a modern vehicle with high-zoot technology it's easy to view them as a you might any other modern performance vehicle, and treat their servicing the same way. Our Prowlers are up to 10 years old now (but park them beside almost 'any' other 10 year old vehicle on the planet, and see which one draws the crowds) and although they are near, or at the lowest $ value they will be, they still command a non-typical huge percentage of their original price .... in just average condition! Like the man said ... "these things don't just grow on trees" and when they are gone, that's it. |

Many years ago after having my Alfa Romeo "serviced" by the same "highly regarded" imports garage I took the car to a whiz kid mechanic who was an automotive engineering student at the university where I taught (he was one of my students and he wanted to explore the car). He called me up all excited and told me that my car had a number of original parts (he verified this by the brands and numbers) which was impossible if the work I had repeatedly had done had, in fact, been completed. I told him to save all the parts and I went to the other garage and ask them if they would like to buy some parts. This message has been edited by agstoner on 08-08-2008 at 02:36 AM |

I had an 90's Acura Legend with BBS wheels which were on the car when I purchased it new from the dealer. The car required scheduled maintenance which had to be performed twice a year to keep the warranty active. The maintenance were very expensive. For example the one at 15,000 mile intervals was around $800. The dealer did not have the equipment to balance the BBS wheels. Yet every time I took the car in for the scheduled maintenance they tried to charge me for balancing the wheels. I always wondered what else they were charging me for that they never actually did. |
