On the Dells trip I noticed my steering wheel is not on straight. When driving straight the steering wheel is cocked to the left about 10 degrees, probably one gear tooth.
Any opinions on why or how? How hard is it to fix?
This is on the Candy.

Well no wonder ... since you admit to being on "candy", it's likely that your head was just tilted trying to see all the other Kats out your side view mirrior and the wheel is actually NOT the problem ...

Ed, have you "Pot Holed" your car recently? Sometimes even a subtle change from the norm on the front steering can cause the steering wheel to move and remain off center...
You can correct the problem with an alignment if it bothers you. I would.. Good luck, Buddy.

Ed,

When the steering wheel is off this is an indication that the toe adjustment needs to be corrected. In older cars, the steering shaft was just splined and it was possible to remove the wheel and reposition it a spline or two. To properly set toe-in / toe-out, it is necessary to lock the steering wheel in place, normally with a tool which sets on the seat, and then adjust the tie rods to reach the desired specs. Techs were not too worried about centering the steering wheel exactly cause they could compensate by moving the wheel on the splines.

But on newer cars the steering shafts are typically keyed or slotted so the wheel only goes on one way, and setting toe adjustment is far more critical to set properly and end up with the wheel in a centered position.

The fact that your wheel is off does not mean you had to hit a pot hole to have it veer off angle. That can be just normal wear and tear from driving. Alignment shifts due to many causes, mostly settling and wear of the suspension components over time. Find a good alignment shop and make sure to tell them the wheel is off center. Assuming you have not hit anything, and it is just normal wear and tear, they will have it corrected in the course of performing the alignment. You want a full alignment, as they first must set camber and caster, if out of spec, and then toe adjustment is set as the final step.

Hope that info helps...unless you did hit something, it is a simple correction on any front end.

Jim

Jim, are you telling me that when I got the front end chromed and did not get it aligned, I may have goofed up? lol
That is the problem, no doubt. Thanks for the info. I thought it was still like the old days and I never noticed it was "off" before.
DUH on my part.
Thanks again.

Ed,

I thought your car was 100% STOCK!!!

That is exactly the reason for your wheel being off...make sure you do it soon as it could also cause "feathering" of the front tires if it is really out of spec.

Ed, did you get the tie rods chromed? If not maybe just put the left on the right side and vise versa when reassembling?

Prowlerman, someone asked me if my car was totally stock since the plate says "TTL STOK". Except for the mods, it is TOTALLY STOCK.
Gary, both sides were 26 1/2 revolutions, yes they are chromed.

Ed, notices his steering wheel is somewhat off center and takes it to the shop to be repaired....upon closer inspection the mechanic finds the wheel has some melted candy on the steering column causing it to stick a little to the left...

pictured... Ed cruising with his newly repaired steering wheel....no more suckers while driving in the hot summer sunshine....
