To swap out the gears do I need ATF Fluid or rear end grease or both? How much do I need?

I know the ATF is ATF+3 or ATF+3 Type 7176 and the grease is 80W-90 API GL-5

I think I also need RTV silicone. Correct? Need to knwo before I leave for the Smokies.

Anything else?

Thanks

You're putting gears in while at the Smokys?
Rich, there is a D-C dealer right on the main road, just off I-40, about two minutes from the ball park where we are going to have the road course set up, just FYI.

Hi Rich - you only need transmission fluid - no gear oil. There are actually two separate "sections" in the transaxle.
Normally - 2 qts fluid is all you need. ATF+4 can be used in the earlier cars that came with ATF+3.

A little RTV silicon is also needed. (I will bring some also)

Thanks, Tony and Ed.
Ed, I do not want to have to pay the high $ dealer labor charges or have my Kat tied up all day for an 2 hour job. Unless of course they are giving us a good discount. I don't know if I will have time to put in the gears or not. But I will have everything I need just in case.

Rich,

I'll be happy to do the gear change for you using your tools and such, but I can't do it until Wednesday late afternoon or evening.

Just let me know if you want my help.

Thanks Very Much Larry, that would be great. I could certainly use yours or anyone else's help. I am little nervous about doing these things myself. I guess it will all depned on what time we get back to the hotel Wednesday afternoon or evening. I will have all my hand tools and some ramps to back the car up on.

Rich, I meant if you need the fluids you can probably get them there if you do not want to haul them or need a little more once you get there. Sorry I did not make that clear.

Rich,

You will need this oil...

You will need to clean out the old RTV and make it look like this..

Then you will recoat it and make it look something like this..

You will need some trick needles noses to remove the shaft snap rings.

Rich, if yours calls for 3 then that should be OK. Do you have a drain pan, rags and some hand cleaner?

Rich,

On the latest recalls I had done to my KAT... One of them was to upgrade to ATF+4 gear oil.

Gives our clutches a little longer life span.

Rich,

You will also need a thick seringe or a Turkey baster also.
