This past December I took my car to a reputable Body shop and restoration business here in Dayton Ohio. It was there for 3 months or so. They completed the work and it is back.

Last evening, I decided to look for Pontiacs, 1965 - 1966. Nationwide. Well....

I found my GTO, VIN, License (Ohio Historical Plate) car history, Pontiac Historical Documentation, you name it, on ClassicCars.com. At first I was like - "WOW! another Pontiac Copper Blaze Poly car, and with "Poverty" caps too. Wow, and a white Pin Stripe as well! Amazing!" This is an ULTRA rare car so you can imagine my surprise as I went through the pictures and saw it was my ACTUAL vehicle. (the Description is off on numerous, key details)

As I reviewed it, in detail, it is MY ACTUAL CAR! Someone in IL is selling my car. Well, they don't have my car. And I never gave anyone all that data, or permission to list it etc. I have found it on Hemmings, ClassicCars.com, Ebay etc.

Went to the Police today as I researched the seller and looked into BBB, there were multiple reports of "Fraud" and my son ran their reviews ("100% Positive Ebay Reviews!") through a "trust" checker he has access to and he said that it failed - most of the reviews were not from a trustworthy source. They were "False" or "Fake" .

Police called me back this afternoon and left a message and said that they have "interesting information for me, not surprising". I called them back too late but hopefully the Detective will phone tomorrow.

Anyone had this happen? What course of action do I have? Can someone now go get a title to this vehicle made and show up at my doorstep?

Beware - as someone told me a few years ago; " Thieves have sadly, entered our beloved Hobby".

John

Unfortunately these car scams are all too real and wide spread. I sold my "69 Hurst SC/Rambler a few years ago. It was listed on Hemmings and a couple of other online sites. I did one thing correctly. I had graphics made up with my phone number on it that were on the front, rear and side windows in the ad photographs.

Since them, I periodically get a call from someone calling about an ad for the car asking questions. The price is always attractive in the bogus ad so they called. I tell them run don't walk this is a scam.

I had a local Ford dealership sell me a Mustang a long time ago. After I paid it off I found out there was a problem with the title. Apparently it was a repossessed car and I never found out the details. The funny thing is the dealership offered to take the car back in on trade right away. I was suspicious and never found out the whole story.
I eventually got my title and it was OK.

A friend informed me my dart was listed for sale in Canada years ago

I found it & reported it to publisher & they ask how they knew I was the real owner , so answered their question & they removed the add. Then the guy said he had one for sale but used my pictures since mine looked better…… BS

Wish something could be done with all the scammers out there

Well, I had no idea that this stuff does happen all the time and that there are so many people out there doing this,

1) Body shop said; "I've done lots of business with them, and yes, lots of people do not like him because he is a large dealership" Bunk! Also, I NEVER gave anyone any permission to list my car, the VIN, license plate not to mention list it totally incorrectly WRT options etc. and blast it all over the internet.

2) Local Police called me this morning. They called the 1-800 number on the Ad. No answer. They called and left a message at the Dealer. No response. They called the Police in IL. Police either called or visited, not sure. The owner said it was simply a "Misunderstanding". No, it was not. They have taken all ads down; I'll continue to check BUT I need to see what comes up when I google that VIN.

3) Police are requesting that I log a formal complaint with the Attorney General in Ohio. Police checked what I had mentioned that the ratings etc. are not accurate or truthful, that the BBB has multiple complaints that list "fraud" as an accusation etc. Not good.

How do these people continue to operate? Unreal. But as others say, buyer beware, It's a different world.

Verify everything.

Thanks all - Tony, yes, that is a concern! And yes, I am extremely upset about this.

Its crazy and I guess I should call the Ohio Attorney General. Nuts!
