Most people think squirrels are cute. I used to think that to, but no longer. In my previous home they damaged the roof and got into the house destroyed the insulation in the attic, and got into the interior walls. We found one drowned in the toilet. To us they are just as bad as Rats. I now HATE squirrels. We had the roof repaired and a month or so later had the insulation replaced. When putting in the insulation they found squirrel skeletons in the attic. I guess that got trapped inside and starved. Thankfully we don't have squirrels in our current neighborhood. I hope it stays that way. |

Only problem with that it becomes an everyday chore to grease up the post. And, they are smart little buggers and learn ways around your defense. After all, they have all day to figure it out. If they only ate their fair share they would not bug me so much..... |

That made me laugh out loud. So funny but I am going to do it to my feeder. |

quote: You need to move the bird feeder out from under the trees. I have seen the squirrels come down the branches to the top of the feeder and avoid the post all together. |

Put up two poles (or use two trees) and run a wire between them. Put 3 or 4 2-liter plastic bottles on each side of the feeder, which is hanging down from the wire. The squirrels can walk on the wire but the bottles will "roll" or rotate and then can't jump over 3 or 4 of them. Run the wire through the mouth of the bottle and through a hole in the center of the bottom of each bottle. I had a bird feeder hanging and the squirrels would empty it in minutes. I then took a child's snow saucer and drilled a hole in the middle of it to act as a shield. They would then use the left rear leg to hold onto the rope, put their right front paw on the ridge of the disc and do a flip to get to the feeder. I then took a jig saw and cut off the ridge (hand-hold) on the saucer to make it a little more slippery. It was hilarious for awhile but eventually they would figure out a way to get to it, but not at a high percentage rate. |

One day while doing door-to-door market research, this guy knocks on a door and is greeted by a beautiful young housewife. "Hello," he starts, "I'm doing some research for a petroleum jelly manufacturer. Have you ever used the product?" "Yes. My husband and I use it during sex," she answers. The researcher is taken aback. "Um, er, I admire you for your honesty," he continues. "Can you tell me exactly how you use it?" "Sure, we put it on the doorknob so the kids can't get in."

Find seed that they don't eat. We use safflower. Easier and even more fun is to buy those huge containers of cayenne pepper and shake the seed in it before you put it in the feeder. Birds can't taste it, the squirrels on the other hand. That gets funny. I'm with Rich though, if I see more than one I get out something other than pepper to keep them off the property. |
