its offical, heard yesterday that firebird raceway will be closing for good in early april.that leaves no dragstrips in the phx area at all.firebird is a nhra track and firebird lake for the dragboats.they are on resevation land, and it seems like any thing on res land when the lease runs out gets closed.to bad.first it was said it would close, then no,know its for sure it will close.

Question, is the younger generation really into drag racing? Most of the young people around here are more interested in a huge stereo with a lot of base and a loud muffler on a Honda Civic.

I agree wholeheartedly.

The youth of today are still very much into racing. They just use different types of cars. Is it all of the kids, no, but it wasn't when we grew up either. Drag strips provide a safe alternative to street racing. Unlike other forms of racing, you can take an everyday car that is used for daily transportation and race it. Think street racing doesn't happen in your town? Think again. You're just not in the know.

I grew up in Detroit in the heyday of muscle cars. Virtually any night during the warm weather you could find a race on Woodward, or Gratiot or Telegraph. If you were "in the know" you could stop by on Thursday night and watch the guys from the High End Club pair off and rune. Oh and if your car wouldn't run less than a 12.0, don't show up. This was 1970 and the top dogs were running 10.80's through the mufflers versus Pro-stockers running 10 teens.

Try to find a track in Southern California or any large city. Most are gone.

And in my city, street racing continues each night during the warm weather. These are dangerous very fast events where people get killed and the police take the cars of those caught racing.

If you haven't been to a drag strip in the past ten years and there is a national event within driving distance, do yourself a favor and go spend a day watching the Top Fuel dragsters, funny cars, pro-stockers and pro-bikes run. NitroSteve can better describe this as he's lived it. You won't believe what you're seeing. And then you'll see the guys drive his pizza delivery car down the track having a great time testing his ride to the limit and not endangering anyone.

Closing the local drag strips is really a concern for the communities they served.

It's not only the drag strips that are disappearing but also the circle tracks. I know of several in the Northeast that closed (Flemington is the first that comes to mind) as well as some here in Florida. We were into kart racing and several of our tracks have closed too.

When I was in high school I worked at Pittsburgh International Dragway as a parking lot attendant. I graduated high school in 1967 right at the height of the mussle car era. Even though I couldn't afford one of those cars yet it still influenced me. PID is long gone and a while back I went on the internet and found the location where it was and it makes me sad.

Yep, they have better sound systems than we had and baloney slicer mufflers but don't under estimate what they can get out of that little four banger. With turbochargers, nitrous and laptops, these guys make some really big numbers. Their interests are the same as ours were, maybe their priorities are just different.

HAVING RUN MY JET FUNNYCAR AT FIREBIRD FOR YEARS,I KNOW THAT CHARLIE ALLEN CAN BE A PAIN TO DEAL WITH ON MONEY(TIGHT). IT WOULDN'T SUPRISE ME TO SEE THE N.H.R.A. OR FORREST LUCAS TO TAKE OVER RUNNING THE TRACK WHEN ALLENS CONTRACT RUNS OUT. WOULD PROBABLY BE A BETTER PLACE.
