After a 31 year search and a chance meeting with a guy today, I found the first car I purchased. As a matter of fact my first date with Brenda was to buy this car: 1971 Duster 340. I am going to go look at it some time this week and see if it is worth restoring. The engine and transmission have been removed, but we know where they are. The Duster in better days: |

I traded the car in 1975 for this Duster: (which I still have) I knew who purchased the car and who he sold it to. The third owner's nephew was in my office today. I didn't know he was the nephew, but he had the same last name. He remembered the car and where it went when his uncle sold it. It is still there. It is about 20 miles from where I live but been sitting in a field for 10 years. It may be beyond restoring but I won't know until I get there and look at it. I had a 1973 Plymouth Gold Duster with the 225 six, auto, air and fake snakeskin vinyl roof, a real looker. Had to wait in line in Chicago because of the gas crunch and everyone was getting these gas miser 6 cyl vehicles. The guy at the lot said that the air conditioner may not work well because I got a 6 and not an 8 cyl. LoL This message has been edited by Richard Jackson on 08-14-2006 at 06:33 PM |

Dave, Those 340 Dusters were such awesome cars. I bought a 1970 new with only a 4 speed. It didn't even have carpets, let alone A/C. Had it for 3 years and I managed to get it to run consistent low 13.20's at 100mph, with a best of 13.11. It surprised lots of people. Sold it, and the next week it was the wreck of the week on display at the local Shell station for all to see. The guy tried to move a light pole with it, and didn't get hurt too bad in his attempt, but the Duster turned into a parts car. Many times I wish I still had it. First time Nancy saw it, she told her sister that she would date that guy just for his car. Well, 34 years later and Nancy is still around. Duster is long gone, but now I have a PROWLER & NANCY. |

Looking at these old Dusters brought back memories. When I was in high school I had a "pea green" 1970 Duster with a 318. I kept it until the floorboards rusted out. That big trunk came in handy because I would use it to sneak people into the drive-in or the dragstrip when the fellas would be hangin' out. Even though the 340s were respected, most guys preferred the big block Mopars when it came to running on the street or the track. |

Dave, Regardless of condition, buy the car. You can always use it as the donor car in a restoration. There would be enough left of it for a start. Finding the exact car is priceless. Wonder about that, just watch any car auction on TV and you'll see people paying silly amounts of money to own a car like the one that got away. Even if you never restore it just collecting the car and powertrain separately would provide a certain satisfaction. JMHO |

I haven't had a chance to go look at it yet. The guy is only available during the day and I just haven't been able to get away. Hoping to get up there in the next two weeks. |

Well, I took today off to go look for the car. After three stops and talking to people that remembered the car, I found the lot where it ended up. Some time over the Summer, the lot was cleaned out and all the A and B body cars that were there were crushed. It is just an empty lot now. The search is over. |
