‘This is your ''Christian'' evangelical president': Trump is slammed for not reciting The Apostles' Creed during George H.W. Bush’s funeral • Donald and Melania Trump did not recite The Apostles' Creed during George H.W. Bush's funeral Wednesday • Video shows the first couple standing silent alongside three former presidents and first ladies as they all recited the creed • Ivanka Trump also read the prayer, despite having converted to Judaism • Trump has said he is a Presbyterian and grew up going to a Presbyterian church • Social media users pointed out the scene, with some calling Trump a hypocrite for portraying himself as a devout evangelical Christian By Kayla Brantley For Dailymail Published: 00:19 EST, 6 December 2018 | Updated: 09:06 EST, 6 December 2018 As President Trump stood beside former presidents Obama, Clinton, Carter and their wives Wednesday during George H.W. Bush's funeral, all but he and first lady Melania were seen reciting The Apostles' Creed. Trump is now receiving criticism for failing to recite the act of faith, as video shows the front row of presidents and first ladies saying the creed in unison while glancing at their programs where the prayer was printed. Trump, however, remained stone-faced with his program in hand and arms crossed, refusing to look down once for assistance as Melania stood at his side - both silent. Donald and Melania Trump failed to recite The Apostles' Creed during George H.W. Bush's funeral Wednesday, while former presidents Obama, Clinton and Carter did so alongside the first ladies The Apostles' Creed contains a brief summary of Christian teachings and the life of Jesus, with a note of hope for 'forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting'. It outlines the core Christian beliefs with worshipers repeating 'I believe' in God, his son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. The funeral program had the creed printed in full, with a note: 'Said by all in unison'. THE APOSTLES' CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. * universal The Trumps' decision to opt out of the reciting the creed and singing religious hymns has left many questioning the president's beliefs, or if he knows the creed at all. Trump has identified as Presbyterian in recent years and claims to have attended a church of the same denomination growing up. The First Lady confirmed after her visit to the Vatican with the president in May 2017 that she is Catholic. The Apostles' Creed is said by Presbyterians, shutting down some claims that it is outside of his beliefs. 'This is your ''Christian'' evangelical president,' author and political contributor Keith Boykin wrote. The president's daughter Ivanka Trump even recited the creed, despite having converted to Judaism. Another pointed out that Barack Obama, who has been falsely said to be of Muslim-faith was reciting the Christian creed. 'Are you telling me the so-called ''Muslim'' president knew all the words to the Apostles' Creed, but the ''Christian Conservative'' President, did not?', another wrote on Twitter Others seemed unsure of what to make of the scene, calling Trump's behavior 'curious', 'weird', and 'striking'. Video and photos show the first couple standing silent alongside three former presidents and first ladies as they all recited the creed Social Media users pointed out the scene, with some calling Trump a hypocrite for portraying himself as a devout evangelical Christian One man pointed out that Trump started the 'birther' movement, labeling President Obama a Muslim Trump has said he is a Presbyterian and grew up going to a Presbyterian church One woman noted that the Apostles' Creed is recited throughout all Christian denominations The version of the creed used at the service was that of the Episcopal Church. George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara were lifelong members of the Episcopal Church. Although both George W. Bush and Jeb Bush were brought up in the church the 43rd president is a Methodist and the former Florida governor converted to Catholicism, the religion of his wife and children. Seated in order of presidential precedence at the funeral, Trump sat in the first seat in the first row with the first lady beside him. Next to her was former President Barack Obama, former first lady Michelle Obama, and then Bill Clinton with Hillary Clinton beside him and Jimmy Carter with wife Rosalynn. The Trumps slipped out of cathedral after the casket carrying the remains of the late Bush was carried up the aisle of the grand church. The 41st president's casket arrived at St Martin's Episcopal Church in Texas Wednesday night where he will lie in repose overnight. The Apostles' Creed is considered Christianity's most core statement at the heart of the Christian doctrine |

We should be allowed to honor the dead in our own personal way. I bet Tom didn't even know what the Apostles' Creed was before 5 days ago. |

quote: They person that posted that is just another Liberal Moron hater. Obama was not reciting them from Memory he was reading them as were many others. If Obama "KNEW" the Creed why would he have to read it? And whether Trump read them or not, I surely DO NOT CARE. In the grand scheme of things this is just nit picking nonsense.
We can only speak to what the video record shows, however, and not its significance. It’s possible that either or both of the Trumps had religious or other personal reasons for declining to participate in that aspect of the service. Indeed, in a Washington Post opinion piece, Patrick Nugent defended President Trump’s actions, regardless of what might have motivated them:
The Creed — or any Christian creed — is a statement of belief and a public commitment to very specific, carefully enumerated theological doctrines. It is not a bland, generic greeting-card prayer addressing an impersonal creator, a “force,” “the universe” or “the spirit of goodness” that could conceivably be uttered by anybody of any religious perspective or none at all. I admit entirely that the Trumps’ abstention could well have been motivated by cluelessness, inattention, bad taste, bad manners, unfamiliarity, distraction or any number of other things. But the bottom line is that they abstained from reciting aloud, in public, a personal commitment to the truth of very specific, classic, ancient Christian doctrines. The president participated in a public ceremony in his capacity as head of state, not as a Presbyterian (which is how he has identified himself). As such, he has no obligation to declare those theological truths, or any others, aloud in public. In fact, I’d suggest, he has an obligation not to do so if he disagrees with any of them, or all of them, or doesn’t especially care, or isn’t sure, or doesn’t understand — or just thinks the president should be theologically neutral in public. This wasn’t the only criticism levied at President Trump over something he allegedly did (or didn’t do) at George H.W. Bush’s funeral. Many social media users also accused him of disrespecting the deceased by failing to place his hand over his heart while the former president’s casket was carried into Washington National Cathedral. We investigated this rumor, too, and found that the accusation was largely inaccurate. This message has been edited by BeWare on 12-12-2018 at 04:24 PM |

Joe02,,, I'd bet those EX-presidents and their wives 'reading The Apostles’ Creed' from the funeral program had either 'never heard it before or never knew what it meant'. Doubt any of them are really religious....well maybe the Carters are since brother Billy Carter was a loser and a drunk,,,so they prayed for him. |
