I've lived in the south most of my life. I'm 68. When I was 8 I don't remember security alarms in peoples homes, most people didn't lock their doors. If you saw a teen hitch hiking you thought seriously about picking him up to help out.In school ,sneaking around to smoke a cigarette was considered pretty wild. All young boys worked for extra money. Everyone went to church. Parents had the final word on what happens in the home,Dad was the final word, but Mom took care of most things.

Today we live better and have more and know more.Parents are expected to help out almost forever.Everyone has a credit card and money is easy to get if you really want to work.Church isn't expected to be a big part of our lives.Doing drugs is common at any age.

Were we better off or not? I told my wife we really lucked out. I wouldn't have wanted to be a generation before my own and I don't think the generation after mine will be near as happy.

Opinions?

i believe that every generation has the exact same question about "how things are"?

as for what the answer is.....I guess that depends on your personal situation....for the most part..i think life is easier now than it was 60 years ago...that being said....there are aspects of our culture that are worse than 60 years ago as well....while we are better off....there has been a higher costs for the improvement...most families need a 2 incomes now....family values have suffered....and on and on....

but I would not want to go back to 1955....

Since I fall a few month's short of actually witnessing a full sixty years of our history, I really can't look back that far.

With that said, it is my opinion that as time goes on society is losing many of the basics needed to retain or attain the quality of life we have been striving for.

The declining integrity, ethics, compassion, morals, and understanding we have seen in the past few decades seems to be taking a toll in ways that have yet to be realized.

In many ways there is more tolerance, understanding, and acceptance in today's society while at the same time an increasing degree of intolerance, selfishness, and hatred seems to be abundant.

It would be nice to see everyone accept others as they are without judgment, prejudice, or the desire to make them fit any specific mold.

As I have said before, if individuals were to treat one another as they would hope to be treated, I think we could all live in a better society and benefit from the improvements in technology that could provide a better life for all of us.

Life is definitely easier due to scientific, technological, medical, etc. advances. People live far longer and contribute so much more at mature ages. Cars used to last 100k miles maybe. Flat tires were constant and you had to do oil changes at 3k miles tune ups at 10k.

But it comes at a price. Moral and ethical values have fallen.
I have given to my kids, but haven't taught them the value of hard work as I HAD to do in order for our family to make ends meet. Lifestyles are easier, but not necessarily better.

All in all though, I think life is still far better now than in my parents heyday.

Another thought. I hear people bash the youth of today, but in my kids and their friends I see some really sharp folks. We often hear of the bad ones, but most of the youth of today have more on the ball than those of my era.

Life has had its ups and downs. As a kid,the 50's and early 60's were great. We didn't have much, but I would say we were an average family at that time. Everyone looked after eACH OTHER. It was yes sir,no sir , yes Mme, no Mme. If you screwed up, you would be corrected by an adult, or wait till your father gets home! You showed respect to your elders. I remember working in a grocery store bagging groceries and carrying them out to the cars for $1 an hour after school. This is 1961-63. Gasoline was .20 a gallon. I remember putting a dollars worth gas at a time in my car. Movies at the drive in was a dollar a car load. You would be amazed at how many kids would fit into a car. Date night during the week, if your home work was done, was 10pm. Friday and saturday it was midnight. God help you if you were late.

I feel sorry for the kids now days. There is so much bad in this age they have got to be aware of. All you can is instill your values in them and pray that it works out alright for them.
