quote: If I may jump in on this one,,, Every time I see this topic come up, I thank my lucky stars that I don't have this stress in my life. I never have to think about getting healthcare or coming up with hundreds of dollars every month to protect my family. Yes our system has it's issues but if I'm hurt or in a serious health situation, I will be looked after. And the lack of yearly stress is a huge bonus. All these different coverages and supplimental stuff and 5000 page obamacare document makes me squirm when I hear it.I took my grand daughter to emerg last month with severe stomach cramps. I was prepared for the usual 4 hour wait. But they triaged her in immediately and had a team attending to her within minutes. It's not the cadilac of healthcare but if you need cadilac you can simply pay extra for it. If you want to know about Canadian health care, ask a Canadian. You will hear of some nightmare stories, but most Canadians love it. For some it's a major reason why they live here. |

I wonder what the breakdown is as far as how much you actually pay per year on your taxes? I am unknowing in this area . |

I'm not sure how the taxes are dibbied up. What I do know is billions of dollars per year are not going into the pockets of insurance company shareholders and the huge cost of the bohemuth insurance machine that I hear about in the US. It seems so all consuming for your country. To us it's a non-issue for the most part. |

I have a good friend who is in his mid 50's and retired. He had a private health insurance plan that covered him and his wife but it was declared non compliant with Obama care so he lost it. In talking with his insurance guy he discovered the new Obama care plan he was now eligible for would save him several hundred dollars a month thanks to a generous Goverment subsidy. He paid for it and has been happy with it so far. Oh did I mention he is a mulit-millionaire? Yep he is worth several millions of dollars and yet qualifying for a Obama Care subsidy. You see since he is retired and has very little income,so according to Obama care,he is poor and in need of help. What a way to run a railroad! Yes i do live close to Canada. It's honestly hard for me to share my true feelings about the Canadian HealthCare system, as I hear good and bad. I can say I have a very good friend who is Canadian who lives in Arizona and hates the heatlhcare in Cananda. I also own two homes in Arizona that we rent out to snowbirds and most of these snowbirds come from Canada and they come down and pay cash for some medical services. Another quick story from about 4 years ago. A good friend of my mom who is a traveling nurse, 4 years ago while working per diem at a hospital in Canada was diagnosed with stomach cancer. She was put on a list to receive radiation/chemo and was told it would be about 4 months. She freaked out long story short, sold her condo located in Vancouver, Washington paid cash for her cancer treatment, lived with my mom during this process. Today she is back at work cancer free, and was told if she would have waited 4 months she would be dead. On the flip side some people are happy with it. I have this feeling it really depends on where you live in Canada on how quickly accessible immediate health care is needed. You speak of a multi-millionaire who is able to get subsidies and I totally believe that. At this time I have two cousins, one a prince of Saudi Arabia and other a prince of DuBai. They both spend about 4 months a year here. They both just came in during the month of December, as they both have subsidize healthcare through the exchange. One of them drives a $200,000 Porsche. Their "allowance" into the United States in non-taxable. I wish the government would have went another direction, from a current business model that has been around 15 years, and funding keeps getting reduced, but they still thrive. They are called Medicare Advantage Programs, they offer no qualifying, no age band and out of pocket maximums half of under age 65 bronze plans. Medicare Advantage plans are private sector plans protected with cost control by the federal government called Medicare Allowable. I feel Medicare Allowable should be higher. However in the highest utilized segment of insurance in the area I live. I can put someone age 70 on a zero premium plan with free gym membership, eye wear allowance and dental for no premium. And a medical out of pocket maximum of $3000.00. The government could have spent NOTHING to bring these to market, and they are already here. Our current exchange set up was all about control and getting more of us onto the government programs. Unlike Medicare Advantage plans, the ACA plans never tackled cost control and pharmacy cost control. |

And by the way I don't bury my assets. I don't qualify for the exchange. I privately pay my premium for my wife and I to the tune of about $1300/month for the two of us. My wife 3 years ago had an allergic reaction to a medication that sent her into acute renal failure. She was in the hospital for 7 days and the bill was $387,000.00. After careful review of the billing. We were charge $20.00 per ibuprofen tablet she was administered. To me the problem lies in excessive billing. |

I'm sure a lot of the excesses charges (here anyway) are due to the illegals (no money, no insurance, no address) who the hospitals treat and/or deliver their 'anchor' babies for.......no way of collecting 'jack' from these people. |

quote: A few month's ago for the first time since I was born, I was admitted to a Hospital for an overnight stay. This was an unexpected stay for me since the procedure I had was supposed to be an "out patient procedure". Looking at the statement of benefits my insurance company sent me, I had a difficult time understanding what charges were for what. There were multiple line entries that simply said "Surgery" in varying high dollar amounts. The only line item I understood was the $1,600.00 charge for my overnight stay. I don't recall seeing a room rate posted on the back side of my door but thought that was a little out of line for one night's stay. On the bright side, I did get two meals out of it. My health insurance plan is currently very good but may soon change for the worse when our Union Contract expires. I for one am seriously concerned that Ben Dover will be doing the negotiating for our health benefits. |
