the Trans-Pacific Partnership Obama is for it so I'm sure we can rely on our resident conservatives to oppose it. You should. The Trans-Pacific Partnership, now headed to Congress, is a product of big corporations and Wall Street, seeking to circumvent regulations protecting workers, consumers, and the environment. Watch this video, and say “no” to fast-tracking this bad deal for the vast majority of Americans. ------------------ This message has been edited by reechee on 02-05-2015 at 04:52 PM |

We don't need any more good trade deals. They are doing this behind closed doors. |

Trans-Pacific Partnership Threatens American Sovereignty http://www.triplepundit.com/2012/07/trans-pacific-partnership-threatens-environment-economy-american-sovereignty/ In essence, after two years of closed-door sessions, this is what the agreement aims to achieve: severely limit the regulation of foreign corporations operating within U.S. boundaries, enough to give them greater rights than domestic firms, Under this agreement, foreign interests could purchase mineral rights in this country, and if there is a dispute, say, for example, someone else already owned those rights, the dispute will be settled by a foreign tribunal, whose judges rotate into and out of their roles from the very corporations who are pressing the claims. ------------------ |

I must admit that when this thread was first posted, I did not know very much about this trade agreement. I have over the past couple of days read up on it....and in my opinion...it does have problems...it doesn't go far enough in the area of intellectual property...giving the U.S. drug companys too much power over their patents in order to keep drug prices artificially high....what I read is that the drug companies are being rewarded for their support of obamacare. but as for the rest of it...it seems to be loosely modeled on the NAFTA agreement of 20 years ago....which was arguably the best thing Clinton ever signed.....I know the unions hated it...but it reduced or eliminated artificial tariffs and provided for more market driven price controls. we have always had a problem with pacific rim countries who at least in part prop up certain industries with government money....this agreement is a start in the right direction to reduce that... so from what I see....so far....it is a start in the right direction......reducing artificial tariffs and barriers to trade is generally a good thing....this agreement is a start in that direction....but only a start.. |

Don't you think it is kind of sneaky? We only know about the TPP's threats thanks to leaks – the public is not allowed to see the draft TPP text. Even members of Congress, after being denied the text for years, are now only provided limited access. Meanwhile, more than 500 official corporate "trade advisors" have special access. The TPP has been under negotiation for six years, and the Obama administration wants to sign the deal this year. Opposition to the TPP is growing at home and in many of the other countries involved. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ws87OnUASWg If you notice liberal TV is going against Obama. this just in: "This is the first update of the National Security Strategy that Obama has sent to Congress since 2010, even though he's required to do it every year under the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Department Reorganization Act of 1986." He has an agenda, it just doesn't coincide with anyone else's or the Constitution. The Emperor has no clothes. |

OK, lets blame Obama on this but who is going to get blamed when the Republican Congress passes this behind closed doors? One of the countries we will be competing with cheap labor is Vietnam. Remember, there is always another third world country to send our jobs to. |

Blame Obama that's fine. The point is, if you feel this is a bad deal, you should contact your representatives. ------------------ |
