The net increase in the number of employed working-age adults in North Carolina has gone entirely to legal and illegal immigrants since 2000, according to an analysis of government data conducted by the Center for Immigration Studies.

According to the limited immigration group, while the “native” working age (16-65 years old) North Carolina population has increased by 61 percent since 2000, the share of “natives” in that state’s work force has declined.

“The total number of working-age (16 to 65) immigrants (legal and illegal) holding a job in North Carolina increased by 313,000 from the first quarter of 2000 to the first quarter of 2014, while the number of working-age natives with a job declined by 32,000 over the same time,” the report reads, explaining that in the past 14 years has seen the labor-force participation of natives in North Carolina in decline.

The study comes as North Carolina Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan — who voted for the Senate-passed "Gang of Eight" immigration bill last summer that would have provided a path to legalization to the undocumented population and significantly increased the number of guest workers in the United States — is engaged in a tight re-election bid against Republican challenger Thom Tillis.

“A huge number of working-age people in North Carolina are not working, and labor force participation remains at record lows. Thus, it is remarkable that any of the state’s political leaders would support legislation that would actually increase the number of foreign workers allowed into the country,” Steven Camarota, CIS’s head of research and the report’s lead author, said in a statement.

CIS, in recent weeks, has been publishing studies showing the negative impact of immigration on work force participation among “natives” in certain states and across the country.

According to CIS the two major conclusions from their study include:

-First, the long-term decline in employment for natives in North Carolina and the enormous number of working-age natives not working clearly indicate that there is no general labor shortage in the state. Thus, it is very difficult to justify the large increases in foreign workers (skilled and unskilled) who would be allowed into the country by a bill like S.744 that many of the state’s politicians support.

-Second, North Carolina’s working-age immigrant population grew 146 percent from 2000 to 2014, one of the highest rates of any state in the nation. Yet the number of natives working in 2014 was actually lower than in 2000. This undermines the argument that immigration increases job opportunities for natives.

Several years ago I was visiting a small town outside Raleigh North Carolina. We looked up a family my wife knew when she lived there many years ago. I was outside and I noticed farm workers picking crops in the field so I asked the guy we were visiting who they were. He said they are Mexicans, the blacks won't work for the wages the farmers pay. No racial slur intended. If you think about it even though it wasn't said, whites won't work for those low wages either. If you look back at our history this has happened before with other ethnic groups during large immigration periods of the past. I could look up a bunch but it is history repeating itself. If businesses paid a living wage people would be lined up for the same jobs. Jmo

Why should they work when the govment pays them more to stay at home and not work? Free cellphones, free cable, free food, free medical care and housing? The welfare system needs to be reformed!

Exactly correct. They are third and fourth generation welfare "earners". They wouldn't work for $ 40 an hour.

Several years ago I moved to a small town outside Phoenix Arizona (Mesa to be exact, 1975, population 57,000). I could drive down the main business streets of the town and read all of the business signs in English. Fast forward to 2014.....today the population of that once small town is 480,000 and when you drive along the business streets of Mesa, you'll see that over 50% of the signs are in Spanish. Furniture stores, gas stations, hardware stores, drug stores, manufacturing plants, new car dealerships, restaurants and more are now gone,,,mostly replaced with signs of 'Quick Loans, Title Loans, Pay Day Loans' and used car sled lots selling POS old cars with signs stating "Buy-Here, Pay-Here", "No Credit Check", "EZ Pay & Drive",,,,all catering to the Latino influx of population explosion, both legal and illegals. The once nice small town I moved to in 1975 is now turning into a slum-fest of single family homes being occupied by three or four families, with only the younger ones speaking any English. I could go on and on about crime activity, drug movement, over crowding our schools with slow learners, and the overflow at the hospital ER,,,,but I'll stop here because someday the same is coming to a town near you as long as the free flow of illegal, non-english speaking people are allowed into this country and able to move about to whichever town/city/or state is paying the most benefit dollars.

Its the end of the world, I tell ya,,,,the end of the world......

I was born, raised, educated and now run a business in NC. Immigration has had a positive, but mostly negative effect on our state.

To the comment on the immigrates working the field because others will not work for such low wages is total BS.....They will not work for any wage. I have seen it first hand. I have had applicants walk from $50,000+ a year delivery jobs cause with all the socialized benefits and can supplement that with cash jobs such as landscaping they can make more and work less. It is like that in most industries here and in neighboring states I do business in. There is a disincentive to work!

Best thing the new Governor has done is to roll back term of unemployment benefits. In 14 months unemployment has fallen from 9.8% to 6.6%. Guess what....cut off unemployment benefits after a reasonable period, they get jobs.

I was quoting someone who was born in North Carolina, worked in the textile industry until his job was shipped overseas and was lucky enough to retire at Social Security age. I took what he said at face value. I know some people will not work for any wage, there are people who have jobs that get paid and don't work either, their employer is just blessed with their presence I guess.

Understand Padroo.
Sorry if I came across as slamming you, that was not my intent.

Textile industry was decimated in NC. Cotton mills employed thousands in this state including my father, uncles, aunts and even my wife. My wife works for International Textile Group which is the company Wilbur Ross formed from the remnants of Burlington Industries and Cone Mills. These two textile giants at one time were the two largest textile companies in the world. Now their combined executives and admin are headquartered on one floor of a single building. Most of their manufacturing is in Mexico and Vietnam. Mainly denim for VF (Wranger) and Levi. Some menswear, draperies and automotive headliners.

IMO there are plenty of jobs in this area of the country. Aviation industry is booming here. They can't get qualified workers. Will train & school them. Great pay and benefits, but have a lot of trouble getting people in the program. Hitting schools hard to get young people interested in aviation as a career.

I sit on the NC Dept of Commerce board and see a ton of stats. I firmly believe that 6% unemployment is as low as it will EVER get. At least 6% of the population will "game" the system through unemployment and disability fraud.
