A Plymouth-Chrysler mechanic replaced the lower ball joints, front rotors, pads, VSLs, did a 4 wheel alignment, test drove and suggested I should replace the rear wheel bearing(s). Should I replace the whole hub assembly or just the wheel bearings only? Thanks, Dave

I have never heard of anyone doing this yet. Did he say why they needed to be replaced?

He did a test drive and said there was noise coming from one of the rear wheel bearings. He had just completed a 4-wheel alignment after replacing the front lower ball joints, etc. They/he are a VERY reliable-excellent reputation alignment/brake shop and upscale, hot rod builders. He says only about an hour's labor and I supply the parts I want. He said one of the rear wheels was out of alignment...and he found that a bit unusual. He said he corrected it and didn't notice the need for any additional alignment components....just wheel bearings. If I replace everything it's not a big expense at about-under $300 with only about $80-100 going to labor. Not any motivation for him to do unnecessary work.

I occasionally have a noise coming from rear passenger side. I'm more concerned that it might be a transaxle bearing vs wheel hub....but who knows.

How would you change the bearings only? It is a hub/bearing assembly all in one. You can get a complete hub assembly for $30-$40 ea. I replaced one after original started to squeal. Jack up wheel and rock wheel to check for any play

Thanks to all....Yes, I found out it's a whole assembly and ordered 10 of them....only kidding! Ordered two for the rear...and new spindle nuts. Sooner or later (most likely later...much!) I'll get more of this stuff figured out. Until then, all your help is invaluable. Thanks!

Today, I had both rear wheel bearing hub assemblies changed out. The left rear was thoroughly trashed and as loud as a bad cement truck drum. It took the mechanic 2.5 hours to R&R both. OEMs were replaced with Moog lifetime hub assemblies. Nice and quiet now, no more grinding noise.

Awesome! Did you notice any play in handling? I would think if a bearing is bad it would vary the tracking of rear wheels....

Yes! The mechanic noticed it on a road test and also told me the left rear was out of alignment. Including parts, the repair was about $300 for both rears. It could have been done for less, as there were some replacement hub assemblies for about half the price of the Moog parts.

Thanks for posting results, if you could post part numbers, price and where you bought them could help others in the future.

Excellent suggestion. I bought 2 each, MOOG 513089 rear wheel bearing hub assemblies from Rock Auto for $46.79 each, plus shipping and 2 each, new Dorman Flanged Hex Spindle Nuts M2720 Hex Size 34mm at O'reilleys for about $10 each with my vet discount. Before I buy any Prowler parts, I pretty much ask the POA members what they'd suggest. I've found their advice to be invaluable. I also check out the Diagnostic and Service manuals for procedures and torque values and double check by doing a POA search to see if the info is currently correct...as some service manual torque values and procedures have been updated.
