In contact with Rare Parts and have good news. There is quite a bit of testing regarding ball joints and their application(s) in general. A lot of the testing revolves around how much integrity the ball joint has to have based off it's application in the vehicle. I had sent RP a good ball joint(bad boot), so they could get test results and make sure a replacement was at the very least as strong as our originals. Most of the strength test revolves around what is called,"pull out strength". The stock b-joint I sent them required 8000 lbs to pull the stem out of the housing! Form what I'm understanding the replacement they've put together has 2 TIMES THE PULL OUT STRENGTH as our stocks do! And for some of you that have wanted, it will be grease-able as well!!! So as it stands right now, there's a couple more items they're finishing up with. Working on the price as well so should have that soon. So hang tight everyone. This looks VERY promising for us!! Will get you all info as soon as I have it. And I think it will be very soon!! Thanks for your patience........Mike |

Thanks to everyone. There's a couple of items that I have brought up with Glen as well. The replacement ball joint will probably not have the black plastic coned attaching nut as the factory did. So we will probably be running a washer under the nut so the nut won't gall the aluminum steering knuckle. I believe that the replacement will have a way of holding the top of the stem while we are torquing in place to prevent it from possibly spinning. Probably have to use a crow foot socket as well. Have more info for all when I get it. Any body else that can think of any topics or concerns regarding this, now is the time to bring them up. what are they doing to reduce the torque or twisting on the dust boot from turning the steering wheel? Thank you, BTW!! |

Boot should be made from material that is highly resistance to sunlight (UV) and ozone, since we have an open-wheel design front end. Boot should also be highly resistant to torsional loads (rotating) , as when wheel is turned during steering maneuvers. I would be great if boot can be replaces without having to press out ball joint. Just separate knuckle. Glad to hear they will be grease-able. |

One of the differences that we will see and deal with regarding Rare Parts replacement b-joint will be the attaching nut. It will be a castle nut and it will have a more conventional cotter pin. I was somewhat concerned that with out the black coned washer to prevent the stem from turning we might have an problem pulling the stem through the steering knuckle. Well.....after going over this, it became apparent that the reason the black coned washer is there in the first place is to prevent the stem from turning not because of how it fits in the knuckle but because the factory nut is a ny-lock design. It's only there to overcome the ny-lock tension on the upper portion of the threads!! The service manual didn't elaborate on this and it seemed like a mystery. If someone had brought this up before I missed it. I for one never thought of it being anything other than another odd ball design with Prowlers in general. It isn't, it's simple! I'm still floored over not figuring this simple design feature out during the million discussions over these ball joints. |

There's a neat new solution for a castle nut and cotter pin. A friend just received a patent on it. Trying to figure out how to post a picture. Sorry. |
