I noticed right away that the chrome was peeling off the inside of all fours rims. After breaking a center cap, another story,I took the rims and sanded the chrome off of all four rims, this took forever but finally I got it finished.I started to polish all the rims out,but was so exhausted from getting rid of the chrome,I thought I'd wait. I found some paint that sort of matched the A arm color and sprayed the rims and bolted everything back up.
Now I'm thinking about polishing all the rims out, which would take me forever or have a painter paint the inside professionally.
Has anyone polished their rims? I know the chrome peeling off is pretty common. Maybe I should have a painter just paint the inside Silver or the Blue that matches the car. Whata think?

Since you "sanded the chrome off of all four rims", if you paint the inside silver or blue that matches the car, what will you do with the outside where you sanded the chrome off? Polish? Paint? Powdercoat? How do they look after you spray painted them to match the arms?

I was thinking of doing same on the inner rims ( painting them inside only) after I saw the custom Prowler picture, the one with the ingraved Arms. His inner rims were painted red I believe.

I can't seem to find that picture or the post of it.

Let me know how it goes....

"I noticed right away that the chrome was peeling off the inside of all fours rims." The outside of the rims are in great shape, the chrome is fine.

I think I'm going to try polishing the rims.

I purchased a second full set of rims and tires when I bought my 99. Original tires and painted rims were put into safe storage, the second set of factory painted rims (early 99 car) sent to a shop that specialized in polishing for show bikes. The results were great, still are with zero maintenance. I utilized the then available chrom center caps, since he couldn't polish the plastic, and the combo is spot on. Didn't have the luxury of finding aftermarket rims way back then, but wanted something 'different' than "factory". They even polished out all the ridges on the inside barrel surface ... its like a mirror-ish now.

Yes you stated the inside was peeling. You also stated you sanded the chrome off all 4 rims. The outside of the rims are chrome also so I thought you took that off too to make it all the same.

No I'm not that eager for a complete rim to be sanded. I'm not sure the spoke part of the rim is Aluminum, do you know? I'm just trying to do something with the damaged inside part of the rim. Rechroming would be way to expensive, I think I'd just order new rims before doing anything like that. The link I attached looked like the inside polished out pretty well, but VERY time consuming.

I used a flap disc on a grinder to get the chrome off. It took about 10 minutes per wheel. I didn't grind the outer rim because there was no peeling on it. Then I masked it all off and sprayed on that black rubberized rocker guard stuff on. It actually looks pretty decent with the outer ring still chrome. A plus is that tire foam cleans it really well.

I figured I'm eventually going to come across some perfect wheels but these are keeping me happy for now.

Looks great, Gort....Ever think of painting your brake calipers blue?...Easy to do and very inexpensive...(just be careful where you paint)...

Really never thought about it. What do you think about the INSIDE of the rims being painted the same as the body color?

I think I'm going to polish the inside of the rims, I was planning on doing this when I get new tires, that way I can polish the extreme outside of the rim. Blue was just a thought.

As far as the brake calipers being blue...another color match question..would it match. I already have two shades of blue(pinstripe), I thought the brake calipers had to be painted with heat resistant paint.

I painted my calipers (purple) with regular paint a few years ago...No problems with heat....And if it's not a perfect match, you'll never notice it..(The light blue pin stripe color might really be cool on the calipers!!!...

I too, have wondered about painting the inner barrel of the wheels to match the car...It might really look great, and if it doesn't, it's not a big deal to re-paint since you've already stripped the chrome and prepped the surface for paint

Go for it...

looks great! Do you think the OUTER part of the rim is Aluminum? I know it's chrome plated but I don't think it is.

Here they are stripped. Not sure where the pink color comes from but I noticed it when I was grinding my chrome off.

Those aren't mine. They might be padroos or meancat Jerry's.

I just posted that to show you they were all one metal.

It's all about money and time.

1. Send the rims off to be rechromed..$1300/30days

2. Polish and buff with the tires off..$20/1 week

3. Paint the same color as the car(I have a great matching paint) 3 days/ $200

4. Buy new rims..22s and 18s..7 days/ $1900

5. No nothing...today/free

Can you go in to detail on #2.
What exactly did you do and what did you use. And what procedure did you do.
Thank you

Started off with a 80 grit wheel on a 6 inch disc sander, after that 120 grit smoothed it out pretty much. If I polish it out,it will take several hours of getting the fine marks out and buffing it so it looks nice. The problem is where the tire and rim meet along the outside rim, that would be harder to get looking nice with the tire on the car.It can be done...just a lot of work.

Roger, those pictures are the ones from Fast Forward Wheel, the place where I had my wheels done. That is the copper plating they do before they are chromed. My wheels look great but MeanCat said his are bad from the same people, go figure.
