Need a little help.I was considering replacing my 99 fuel filler neck and hose since I have the problem of not being able to completed fill the tank as well as a very slow fill.I have tried keeping the fill nozzle out of the tank to allow the venting but it does not seem to work.It this something I can do my self or is it something for the dealer or mechanic to perform ? What is involved and how long does it take? Does Chrysler still carry the replacement parts for Service bulletin # 14-04-99 ?
Thanks for your help

If you take it to the dealer, There is a recall if I remember right, I had the same problem, dealer did the work & was covered at no charge.

As I understand it there is a TSB, but not a recall. I had mine done by the dealer BUT I supplied the parts as my dealer wanted to charge me out the a$$ for the parts. I can't remember what they charged me to change out the parts but it wasn't too bad.

Just checked my notes from this fix. The dealer wanted $643 to make the fix telling me they had to drop the tank etc. I told them to forget it and I would live with the problem for that price. Another kind Prowler owner sent me the TSB and the part numbers. The TSB says it takes one hour and the tank does NOT need to be dropped. I could have done the job myself, but when I took it to my dealer to change the tires they did it for $92 when I showed them the TSB. TSB is 14-04-99

The parts are Tube-4786478AD and Hose-4865372AA. I ordered them from wholesalemopar.com. Looks like the costs have gone up a little. The tube is about $125 and the hose is about $20.

I would call a Chrysler Dealer. Ask for the service manager and ask him if he can email you the bulletin.

I did this TSB in about an hour or so as I recall. Take off the rear wheel and it's all pretty easy to reach. This is a pretty good DIY project. Also you can get up in there and clean the area good while everything is opened up!

I had mine done at the dealer & was covered under warrenty, they did not have to drain the tank, just remove the tire and ran his arm up the side of the tank

I have just had my Prowler for about a month and haven't put that much gasoline in it. The other day I decided to fill it up and could only reach about half full. I have a 2002 year model. Did this year have the same problems as the earlier models?....Thanks

I have had it happen very infrequently on my 2002. On the 99 it was about 80% of the time.

Try filling up at a station where you car is on a angle. I beleive many have had luck that way. You could also try a different Gas station as some nozzles cut of easier than others.

I have two Prowlers, a 1997 and a 2001, and both have the problem. The 2001 is worse than the 1997. I actually bought the 2001 because I assumed (that word again) that the problem had been resolved after the 1999 build but it had not - I'm living proof of that and other owners that have written to me are as well. It's very frustrating since I can get only about 8 plus gallons into the tank which obviously affects the range, especially if you want to tow the trailer. I'm aware of the TSB and the part numbers of the parts necessary for the fix. The problem is that they're not available anymore. The Prowler Store shows the parts as the fix but I bought two sets, took them to my dealer and ended up sending them back since the dealer told me they were not the right parts. The dealer did a search and came up empty (you can get the hose but not the filler neck). I also found them and ordered them from wholesalemopar.com but they just canceled the order after a few days because the parts were no longer available. If anyone can actually get these parts, please let me know and I'll be very appreciative. I live in North central IL and took a trip to Indiana with my trailer. I had to skirt Chicago and spent much of the trip desperately looking for gas stations. I actually ran out of gas when I drove to Spencer, Iowa to visit my son. You get into Northwestern Iowa and those gas stations get far and few in between. As it is, I drive my Prowlers as "toy' cars locally for grins and I'm considering selling the trailers. I've tried all the suggestions I've seen posted to no avail. The only thing I've found that adds a gallon plus is to have the fuel nozzle handle in a two o'clock position, in other words, the fuel nozzle is almost upside down. Like I said it helps me to add another gallon and a half. Why? I don't have a clue. I think this problem was a serious short comming that was never resolved. The problem seems to occur in some cars and not other and I don't think Chrysler ever figured out what the underlying problem was. Anyway, if anyone is able to actually get the correct filler nozzle (and it works), please let me know, hopefully before I end up selling my trailers since they just take up space in my garage and I'm seriously leaning to getting rid of them.

Hope I'm not diverting the conversation with this, my 97' fills fine, however my guage reads 1/4 - empty and I still have 4-5 gals or more in the tank.

I'm scared to death every time I reach the 160 mile mark of highway driving and the needle is hanging on to nothing but what seems like fumes. I'm seriously thinking of putting a 2 gal gas can on my luggage rack and driving until I hit the 240 mile mark or run out of fuel just to see what will happen.

Is it against the law to drive around witha gas can on the rack? (I fear so).

As noted above I had the repair done a few years back. While it did seem to help, this past weekend I went to Costco to fill up and it took forever with the nozzle cutting off every few seconds.

For me it is still a problem at a few pumps that are set very sensitive.

That must be it. There are differences in the filler nozzles. My 2000 does it every once in a while, sometimes at different stations sometimes not at a pump where it did it before. ?? Go figure. I don't think I want I replace mine if it will still happen or could still happen again. It seems like it must be a vent problem that triggers sensitive or sometimes sensitive pumps.

Me Time, I wonder if you have a bad or short fuel pick up line inside the tank. When you run out you could have 2 or 3 gallons still in the tank but the pick up hose is not on the bottom? Just a thought.

Any idea if strapping a 2 gal can of gas to my luggage rack is legal? That would help me make the 240 mile mark without worrying I might run dry.

Every state has different laws and every city has diff. statutes and I don't even know if it is legal here but you can do it as far as I am concerned. If you get stopped, tell them I said it was okay.
We'll take up a collection here on POA for your bail.
Tell them it is Moonshine.

Don't try to get 240 mi on a tank locally. How many miles per gallon is on the mirror computer? If you get 18 mpg, figure on 180 mi before filling. That leaves about 2 gal. in the tank. As we cruise to an event and the mileage climbs to 21-22 mpg, we can go 210-220 mi before looking for gas.

I've gotten as much as 25 MPG on my way home from chcago, but no mirror readout as mine is a 97'.

Holding the gas can in reserve will help me until I can learn the guage better.
