A long time ago, when I fell in love with the Plymouth Prowler (even before I got my first), I embarked on a journey to find every magazine or media item that had Prowler on the cover and/or articles about the car. Bob had been reading/collecting car magazines since the early 60's and the collection moved with us every time we moved around the country. I always suggested that maybe this time (each move) we should get rid of the magazines and that suggestion was always answered with, "DON'T TOUCH THE MAGAZINES"!! Later, when Prowler was built, I was glad that he always won that argument!! I sat in the basement and paged through every magazine looking for Prowler stuff! I ended up with about 100 magazines...which he so generously gave me for my Prowler collection.

Recently, he started purging his collection and I, again, went through them one more time (in addition to the ones that were added since I last did this). I haven't officially counted them, since I'm still working on my inventory list, but I think I added about another 60 (new and some I must have missed the first time around). During this process, I found some really interesting ads for Prowler and articles that I hadn't remembered seeing. I thought I would share some photos of these ads with you and hope that you enjoy seeing them. I thought they were cool!

Automobile Magazine - October, 1998

Underneath the Drag Nut model car box it says:

Reminiscing about childhood pleasures, Chrysler Corporation designer gets an idea for a production hot rod. Wonders aloud if boss will think he's nuts.

Underneath the Prowler it says:

Putting rationality aside for a moment, we put Plymouth Prowler into production. If you listen carefully, you can still hear jaws dropping.

Automotive Industries - December, 1996

Alcoa Aluminum ad - Underneath the Prowler it says:

For Chrysler's new Plymouth Prowler hot rod, Alcoa provides most of the aluminum parts, including the assembled and welded frame.

Automobile Magazine - December, 1996

Plymouth Ad - Six fun flavors! (Also sold separately.)

Automobile Magazine - December, 1996

Chrysler Corporation - Five page fold-out ad

First page:

Second page: Underneath the Jeep Cherokee picture it says:
January 10, 1992: Chrysler President Bob Lutz introduces new Jeep Grand Cherokee by driving up steps and through plate glass window of Detroit Auto Show. "Wouldn't fit through the door," explains Lutz.

Third page: Underneath the Garage photo - March 15, 1993 -Two engineers "messing around in the garage" develop Chrysler's clutchless manual - dubbed AutoStick.

Underneath the Viper photo - April 1, 1992 - First Dodge Viper roars out of the Mack Avenue Engine Plant in Detroit expressly redesigned for specialty vehicle production. (Reports of V10 engine rumble shattering neighborhood windows unconfirmed.)

Underneath the Prowler photo - January 7, 1993 - Plymouth Prowler concept car developed as tribute to the American hot-rod - draws huge crowds at auto shows across United States, then pleas to put it into production.

Underneath the pizza photo - August 4, 1993 - Another Chrysler first: A group of engineers, working late on new design for dual sliding mini-van doors, places order for 125 large pizzas - believed to be largest in (admittedly sketchy) history of Lorenzos' Pizza.

Fourth page: Underneath the compass - November 6, 1993 - Chrysler employees - 7,000, give or take a few - move into 3.5 million square foot Chrysler Technology Center. A few engineers rumored missing in the days following the move.

Fifth page: Underneath the gear shift - September 18, 1994 - After exhaustive testing, Auto Stick is approved for production in 1996 Eagle Vision TSI.

Automobile Magazine - March 1997 - Chrysler Corporation Ad - A Car Is Born

Underneath Drag Nut - May 15, 1990 - Inspired by childhood memories, a designer at Pacifica, Chrysler's California design studio, scribbles the words "production hot rod" on a 3 x 5 card.

Underneath message slip: May 9, 1991 - Chrysler top management gets wind of project. Message from President Bob Lutz: "If you want this to see the light of day, it better have one hell of an attitude."

Underneath the hand: May 20, 1991 - Lutz is shown scale model of concept car. Grinning, he agrees with recommendation to build full-size version. Project is named "Prowler".

Underneath Microphone: May 10, 1992 - Chrysler team travels to the NSRA Street Rod Nationals for research, inspiration, and rousing performance by Peter Noone and Herman's Hermits.

Underneath Camera: January 7, 1993 - Prowler show car draws huge crowds at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, followed by impassioned pleas to put it into production.

Underneath the body parts: April 15, 1995 - First prototype body parts, fabricated entirely from aluminum, are delivered.

Underneath the glasses: January 10, 1996 - Wearing shades 'a la Jake and Elwood, Chrysler Chairman Bob Eaton and Bob Lutz wheel Prowler prototype into the North American International Auto Show to announce that it will become a limited production 1997 Plymouth.

Underneath Prowler: February 1, 1996 - "The only action more outrageous than creating a Prowler show car is building copies for sale to the public. Proving that this is not your average car company, Chrysler Corporation intends to do just that." Motor Trend, February 1996

Leads to Great Cars. Great Trucks.
