I'm probably going to need new tires this year. I've read all of the posts about swapping from the original run-flats, and there is a common thread in all of them - the new tires give a softer, gentler ride. However, I don't want a better ride - I actually like the bone-jarring, tooth-rattling "original" ride, and would be VERY disappointed if new tires changed it in any way. Is it still possible or advisable to find NOS Goodyear run-flats, or have they exceeded their shelf life? What tires should I be looking at to make sure that anyone with loose fillings is at risk in my car??? |

I think you can get new run flats, but they aren't going to be cheap. |

Goodyear no longer makes them. I got one of, maybe the last set, offered by Tire Rack in November of 2010 because they were being discontinued. I still haven't put them on since my original have a season or two left. If memory serves me right they were almost $1800. I think you are going to have a difficult time finding Goodyears. A search for both turned up nada. Also if you find a set that was stored properly they will be good for an extended period of time. The tire companys want you to spend money on their product so they will tell you that they "deteriorate" after a couple of years. Nonsense. ------------------ This message has been edited by lionberger on 02-04-2012 at 08:58 AM |

As a long-time convert to non-runflats I can honestly say I don't miss the hard ride. When they get a couple of years on them they get dangerous in my opinion. There is an exit on I-95 here in Jacksonville that is long and curved. It is as rough as a cobb. When exiting the highway at 65 mph I would feel the car start 'floating' a little because of the rough road and the stiff runflats. Much like I remember country dirt roads after the spring rains in Michigan. They would get ruts across them from all the rain and thawing - the 'washboard' effect. If you went a little too fast on those roads you would feel the car 'float' all over the road. You could easily lose control if you were not very careful. That is the feeling I would get on the I-95 exit, and other rough roads as well, with the runflats. After I converted to non-runflats and the Wonder Bar the whole driving experience became much better. I can take that same exit and not feel like I might be on the verge of floating into the next lane, as I often did with the runflats. I now have a comfortable and safer ride, and I don't have to give up that sports car, glued-to-the-road feel. In fact, it is enhanced. Having said this, to each his own. If you convert to non-runflats out of necessity, I would put money on on it that you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner. Good luck! Also, all of that bone-jarring, tooth-rattling takes a toll on the whole car over time. (Note: Love the square tires. Too funny...) This message has been edited by EdsCat on 02-04-2012 at 09:08 AM |

What you say about "floating" is quite true. Hydroplaning can be even worse. I got caught in a downpour about a half a mile from a bridge crossing the Mississippi river and lost it going into a curve. Luckily I was able to regain traction before becoming a statistic and, to this day, I don't remember crossing that bridge. Scary. ------------------ |

I purchased two rears manuf. in 2011 on 4/20/11 from my local dealer for $1182 plus $37 for mounting and balancing. I just feel more comfortable with rf's. tom This message has been edited by tom112 on 02-05-2012 at 04:14 PM |

If Tom bought some runflats that were manufactured in 2011, wouldn't there be more in the pipeline? I am sure Goodyear would mfg a "quantity" at a time. Nowhere I checked showed Goodyear RF as a possibility. Are there more out there and I am missing something?????? |

quote: I agree. May be Tom will post the DOT date code off the side of the tire so we can know exactly when they were manufactured. I have my doubts about 2011....or especially 2111! |

I have and extra set of wheels and 2 new rear runflats. I want to keep the car all original as it has 12,000 miles on it. It's not a daily driver so I am not concerned about the ride. Might just take off the originals and put something else on it for future use and store the runflats. Helps keep the resale up for collectors in the future, as they want originallity. |

Something to think about in considering an older tire... Last time I was at Discount Tire, and I went to 2 stores, they refused to mount a tire because it was older than 6 (or 7) years old. They said it was a liability issue. I had to buy a new tire. It might be hard finding someone to mount them. |

Well my face is REALLY red. I just went down to my basement and took one of the tires out of the black plastic bag and they were manuf. in 2008 not 2111. Sorry for the confusion I caused. I was guilty of taking the store's word and didn't even check until you guys seemed to doubt my word by saying " IF" I did as I said that I did. Now that I have confessed to an error ...... tom |
