Dodge brings back the Dart, with an Italian flair

Dodge's newest small car replacing the woebegone Caliber next year will carry the name "Dart" -- the first time Dodge has used that name on these shores in 36 years. This is not grandma's Slant-Six lead sled.

Based on the European-only Alfa Romeo Giulietta, the new compact hatch is the first true mechanical combination born of the Fiat-Chrysler merger. Chrysler says the 2013 Dodge Dart will arrive with a choice of three engines, two of which are updated Chrysler four-cylinders suddenly renamed "Tigershark," because it's cool to get nicknames in middle age. To be competitive with the all-new fleet of compact cars in America, at least one model will need to hit 40 mpg on the highway.

For those unfamiliar with the proud history of the name, the first Dodge Dart arrived in 1960 as a nod to the Space Age, and persevered as a stoic, low-cost compact car until 1976, often powered by the ancient but bulletproof Chrysler straight-six engine tilted at a 30-degree angle. True Dart fans pay respect to the GTS muscle version of the late '60s, but thanks to its low cost and ubiquity in TV shows of the late '70s -- and even "That '70s Show" -- it became known as grandma's car. For the new Dart, Dodge plans to skip ahead at least a couple of generations.

We'll see the real thing at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

not your grandmas DART

Yeah Granny likes driving it too! Sue didn't get to drive it this year due to her back issues

Kind of cool they are bringing the name back. Don't have to worry about them complaining about a 4 door, all Darts came as 4 doors, some even wagons and then the really cool Muscle cars

Why is it that all the "New Retro" reintroductions are of the four door variety only.

Yes I understand the logic of having a four door but in my opinion NOTHING can replace the 'ole two door.

How many of you would have bought the Prowler if it had only been offered with four doors? Very few I would guess.

Haven't had a 4 door vehicle since 1986, an that was my ex's daily driver. Only three total 4 doors, and 2 of them I didn't drive very long.

Remember the NEON first appeared as a 2 door, then stretched to 4, and the coupe was dropped.

Honestly, I rather take the bus than drive a 4 door, lol

Gary,,,,I have neither (Ed told me) so your scenario is dismissed without prejudice.

What fun is it to go places in just one car? Better to caravan to the destination in multiple vehicles and use up more fuel,,,to help support the economy, lol.

Your gasoline taxes at work,,,keeping the pothole fillers employed, and the roads smooth in Maryland.

This is why they have four doors and only my guess. The generation they are going to sell it too is young and the only place you are suppose to put a child safety seat is in the back seat. Have you looked at those things lately, they fill up a full size SUV. Can you imagine a two door version pulling up in front of Grandma's house and digging a kid out of one of those things! Practical.

Another guess. The generation that is going to buy them grew up with four doors just like some of us grew up with two.

I've had/have both two doors and four doors. I buy certain vehicles for specific needs.

My current vehicles:

2007 Jeep Sahara - 4 door
1983 Jeep CJ-7 Limited - 2 door
1999 Plymouth Prowler
2002 Chrysler Prowler
2002 Chrysler Prowler

Bob's current vehicles:

2004 Dodge Durango - 183,000+ miles
2008 Dodge Ram Quad Cab Diesel
1969 AMC Hurst S/C Rambler

------------------
CJ - The One and Only
1999 Black - PPROWLR
2002 Deep Candy Red - CJPROWLN
2002 Black California Kid Prowler - CAL KID

The Prowler makes you smile. Why? Because it's focused. It has a plot, a reason for being, a passion. It evokes the hot rod. It evokes the American Dream. This car is the human psyche.
