Actually, the Prowler and the Diablo have something in common. When the Diablo was produced, Lamborghini was owned by Chrysler. Chrysler's design department extensively influenced the body design, basically adding curves where there were sharp edges. |

While I owned the '91 Diablo (for about 2 years), total maintenance cost was on the order of $20k. Replaced alternator, clutch, restored to stock exhaust (because of Virginia state law), battery drain problem, A/C compressor, and several other smaller things. The biggest bill was for the clutch replacement, which is a full engine out operation with over 40 hrs labor. Labor and parts for that one exceeded $12K. Usually when I had work done, the car was at the dealership (with trained Lambo Tech) for 1 to 2 months, half the time waiting for parts from Europe and the other time waiting for the Mechanic's time. Had problems with the driver door including window that did not shut all the way and the door not closing smoothly. Before I bought the car, it had just undergone a $30k engine-out service, which is supposed to be done after so many miles/years. I sold it well before that next plateau and while is was in very good working order. There was one problem that was a little annoying/tricky. After I powered the car on, the alternator would not begin operating until I revved the engine. Sometimes, while in a parking lot, I would forget to rev the engine. So instead of using the alternator for electronics, it used the battery. By the time I would get to the road, the battery would be drained too much and the car would shut off. To get the car started again, I would need a jump. You have to know the contact points to jump these cars. You cannot connect to the battery directly, because the battery is located inside a panel at the left rear wheel. If one did want to connect to the battery directly, they would have to jack up the rear and take the left rear wheel off first. A/C in the car did not work, so I had this corrected. Once working, it was apparent that it was not designed for summer in the U.S. Above 80 deg outside and the A/C was of no practical use. I did not have this done, but got a quote from an exotic car repair for custom A/C (to make it like a normal U.S.A. car). Estimate was north of $10k. This would have been my next bill if I had kept the car. Also, while parked, for more than a couple of days without driving, I kept the car plugged into a trickle charger, to keep battery from draining. Anyway, a few months after the clutch replacement, I hated to let it go, but decided that it was best to get rid of the car sooner rather than later. There was also an annoying engine light (left O2 sensor) error, which I had the whole time I owned the car and was never able to resolve. |

and what repairs did your Prowler require while you owned it? LOL The clutch on those cars doesn't last very long just like the Countach. Did you find it difficult changing lanes because there was always a car checking yours out while in your blind spot? |

When I considered buying several types of unusual but cool cars earlier this year, I had to consider the issue of servicing and cost. This is one reason I went with the Prowler, despite some issues with expensive parts. Before I even looked at a single car, I called my local Chrysler dealer and asked if they were comfortable working on a Prowler, and they said yes. I live about 3 hours from any sort of exotic car dealers, like the Lambo here, so I have to be careful. I have been pleased with the servce options available for the Prowler locally. All that being said, I think the Diablo must have been the car of a lifetime! |

quote: Exactly, but after reading the above ... BIG question becomes this; At what cost? IF they (Lamborghini's especially) are all similar in this regard, owning one would be VERY cool, driving one exhilarating, but maintaining one ... drive you to poor house! Thanks for the response on ownership CatDude!! |
