I have always wondered how low a production number there should be to make a car collectable. For instance in AC Cobras, it's just under 1000 at 998. In gullwing Mercedes it is 1485. In Ferrari Daytonas, around 1125. But in Prowlers isn't it over 14,000? (I got a similar number from the guy that striped the cars, by hand!). So how does that bode for future appreciation? I live in Inland Empire of Calif. , still see Prowlers on used car lots around Ontario, Montclair, etc. In other words, how long before they are considered rare and start to appreciate beyond their initial sales price, considering their numbers? |

I've always wondered the same things and my theory is it will be 20+ years. Kind of like the winged Mopars of the early 1970s. They were common for several years then faded away as they were abused, wrecked, raced, left to rot in barns and fields. Once people started remembering them and wanting them, they started to greatly appreciate. I think they were built in much fewer numbers than the Prowler, but the model is the same. If nostalgia hits with our kids and the want a large number of Prowlers then they will appreciate. If they don't, then they'll stay flat. |

To determine a car's rarity, you wouldn't compare production numbers to other rare cars. You need to compare with production numbers of most any other car made. For example, in any given year, you will find that between 20K and 25K corvettes were made. In the 5 years the prowler were made, there was a total of less than 12K made. You can do annual production comparisons in the facts and stats page. Given the numbers, I think most anyone would consider the prowler a rare vehicle. It's definitely a limited production vehicle. |

It's tough to compare the Prowler to European exotics. These cars are the forbidden fruit of the average working man. I don't know anyone that owns one and never have. I agree with idive about the Corvette, they are common but very nice cars. When was the last time you rode with someone and said "look there goes a 1999 Corvette." I personally have never wanted a Corvette and they have never gotten me excited. The Prowler on the other hand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

The exact number that defines a rare car is 23,872. If they make 23,873 it is no longer rare. I hope that puts your mind to rest about it. No thanks needed, glad to be of help. |

Ed, your number is spot on. My favorite rare car would be a Bugatti Royale only six made. Beautiful car. I have been fortunate to see two in person. ------------------ |

A Pontiac Aztec is rare I think they made only 3500 or so in the last year of production. Do they bring big bucks?.......... hardly! |

I thought the Cadillac Allanté would be a good collectable car but I see the prices are disappointing. |

...the production numbers don't tell the whole story ...sometimes cars are rare because no one wanted them when they were new...40 years later, still nobody wants them...low dollars... |

When I was a kid I knew a guy who collected, restored and sold collectable cars and he had a saying, "when the top goes down, the price goes up". In other words, any convertible is worth more than its hardtop cousin. I am sure there are exceptions. |
