Do the Prowler keys have a chip in them like a lot of them do today?

I would like to hide a key for emergencies, I guess one of those magnetic boxes are out of the question! Keys for $.99 are a thing of the past for cars.

I don't think there is a chip. I keep a spare in my wallet. But then my top is almost always down during the summer.

Padro,

There is not a chip in the key for the Prowler.

It is possible to get a duplicate key without the rubber head if you prefer.

The correct "Ilco" blank would be a Y157 without the rubber head.

Do not let them make it on a Ilco Y154 blank as it is about 1/8" shorter. It will operate the doors but not the ignition. I made this mistake when making keys for myself.

The magnetic key boxes served their purpose back in the days when there were plenty of places to place it.
These days suitable locations are hard to find.

Even if you find a place to put the magnetic key box, there is a good chance that the first pot hole will shake it loose.

My suggestion would be to "Duct Tape" the spare key somewhere you can get to it but not easily seen.

I provided the ILCO part number as it is a very popular brand for aftermarket keys.

The "Valet" key that came with the car is just a regular key without the plastic so it can be used as a spare.

The Valet key isn't supposed to work in the glove box. Only the door and ignition.

Thanks for all the good information. I don't remember anyone asking this question since I have been on the forum.

He would need a good "Brass" magnet as that is what most keys are made of. Typically they are not magnetic. Sorry

There have been some steel automotive keys but they are few and far between.

A steel key would typically never wear out but the brass wafers or pins inside the lock would.
At that point you would "simply" re-key the lock cylinder instead of make another key. Kinda like running aviation fuel in the lawnmower. (not really practical)

This is true ... but hopefully the emergency "need" is to get in the car and drive, and NOT get into the glove box ... but who knows, right?!

Believe it or not I've had my '97 for 14 years and didn't realize that it had a glove box lock. I had to go check. The way the box slopes down and the lock being colored the same as the lid made it hard to see. I guess you learn something all the time. Thanks!

Andria, of course I meant to epoxy a magnet to your key first.

I take it you are a professional locksmith. I was wondering what you do.

Roger,
Yes I earn my living as a Locksmith. I started back in 1979 and continued until 1999. For the majority of the next six or seven years I worked in the automotive parts business which is what I did prior to becoming a Locksmith. Recently I allowed my ASE credential to expire.

I got back into working as a Locksmith a little over four years ago and immediately discovered how much I missed doing this type of work.

This is a job where I get to go to someone's home or place of work and help resolve their security issues. When I make my customer happy, it is a reward that has no equal. I genuinely enjoy what I do for a living but not always the circumstances that go along with it.

Automotive locks have become for the most part a specialty within the field and I have not kept up with the technology but can still accomplish some stuff when necessary.

When at Prowler events for folks that want the lock on their trailer to match the ignition key, I can facilitate this for them. Some like the idea, others don't.

In short my life revolves around cars and locks.

I had a TR6 once and I lost the only key I had. So I called a locksmith and I was very impressed how easily he made me a new key on site. I though he could have a good career stealing cars without have to punch out the ignition lol.

I have had a few folks over the years ask what keeps me from breaking into or keeping a key to use later and rob the place.

My answer is simple....Integrity, Ethics, and that there is nothing out there that would be worth compromising those.

I have had my screen name as long as I can remember. I lived on the east coat of Florida for 30 years. During that time I worked for IBM an ran a 25' dive boat on the weekends for fun and a little extra money. We would spend a lot of time diving with sharks and being in the computer business I put these two things together and came up with
"SHARKBYTE" which I named the boat. I figured it was more fitting than Rick Blake.

... and I'm guessing that the boat starts with a Prowler key?
