This is my first time on ProwlerOnline so I'll try not to ask too many stupid questions. I plan on buying a Prowler in the next few days and I need some help. Option one is a 2001 Prowler with 16000mi,50% tire tread, and what looks to be a covering of grime on the transmission? transaxle? pan. Other than this it appears to be in excellent shape. Option two is a 1999 Prowler with less than 1000mi and appears to also be in excellent shape (I'll be looking at this one tomorrow). My concerns are (1) How can I find out if either one has had the ball-joint recall done? (2) How can I tell if either one has had problems with the front shocks? (3) Is there a reason to be concerned about the grime on the trans. pan? (4) Should I be concerned about the engine seals and other things on the 1999 since it has been sitting most of it's life? The 1999 costs approx. $1000 dollars more than the 2001. Which one would you choose and why? Sorry about the long post. Thanks,Steve

look at all 4 shocks ,and if leaking you will see it.id go for the one with 16.000 on it.why,at least its been driven.definitely put the car up in the air ,you may be able to see where the grime is coming from.you didnt mention colors.a dealer can run the vin and see what work has been done on it.the grime, it depends on where it is on the transaxle.also do a car fax.

I would shy away from the 01 with grime. Not many have washed the undercarriage but I doubt you will find many with much under it in the way of grime unless there has been some leaks of some kind.
I would go with the 99 but would want to know how it has been kept. Has it just sat or was it run regularly and for how long each time?
Welcome to the POA. I notice you are a local... PM me your email address and I'll add you to my list.
Not to throw another wrench in the fire, but I have a 97 with about 6200 on it. All recalls done. If you have any interest in that one we can discuss it. I'll email you the details on that one.

I do believe that they made some improvements to how the 2001 rides over the 99. Even though it might have some miles on it, that is still pretty low and I am sure you will have many more "Miles of Smiles" in it.

Don't understand grime, but I have seen some that were drivers and not well cared for.

There are a lot of good cars out there. If you see something questionable, pass on it.

As far as a car that has just 1,000 miles. How was it cared for? If it was put up and never run, might be issues, but then it might be OK too.

No matter what you decide once you get a Prowler you will wish you had done it sooner

A 2001 probably has the shocks that were prone to leak. The 99 has KONI's and are the better shocks. There were some changes that make the 2000 and up a little better ride.

2001 has a auto dimming rear view mirror and auto volumne radio. Tires are different for better ride and different colors.

IF I were looking to buy a Prowler I think i would have to try and buy the Orange one listed in the classifieds with the chrome front end.

Good Luck

Thanks guys for all of your input!! Took a mechanic friend of mine and gave the Silver 2001 a good look up on the rack and he sees no discernable problems. No shock leaks,no trans. leaks. Only problems are flaking rims, hood struts and one loose wheel cap so tomorrow it is officially mine!! Now can anyone tell me what web-site to go to so I can see if all the recalls have been done? Thanks again for all the help. Regards,Steve Mccoy

You can call any Chrysler dealer with the VIN# and they can tell you if there are any outstanding recalls. There is a site online you can check it yourself but I don't have it handy. A search should turn it up tho. That feature is located at the top right of this page.
Congrats on your purchase.

StingRay; I had pretty much made my mind up that if the 1999 was close in condition to the 2001 that I would buy the 1999. I'm probably not useing the correct rationale BUT when I got to the dealership to check out the'99 I learned that it had not been stored inside at the dealership on a turntable like the picture showed, but had been left outside for several weeks and was covered in bird-sh%* from top to bottom because it was sitting outside under the dealership floodlights. It was also covered in road grime from being driven in the rain. The 2001 was being stored inside at the other dealership while outside sat numerous Mercedes(Including an AMG),BMW's and other exotics. Might have been a totally different result had the '99 been clean and stored inside. This may not make sense but thats the way things went down.
