Hey. I'm a newbie. I have loved Prowlers since they debuted. So radical! Anyway, I'm thinking more seriously now about getting one and I have the dough.

I'm wondering what model year would be considered the most collectable? I know there are some preformance changes that occured over it's short lifespan and I could use advice on that too.

This is not to diminish the value of any model year. All Prowlers are great. But if you had a choice, what year and color would you pick? Any help is appreciated.

Regards
Roger

if your looking to collect

1. first year, low mileage
2. woodward
3. black tie

if you just want to own something that will put a smile on your face everytime you drive it..your favorite color..

buying a car for collecting usually means you LOOSE several thousand dollars each year you keep it and have non of the fun of driving it

Don't let anything influence you other than what color pleases you most...They're all great!

Owning a Prowler of ANY year or color is a privilege and a joy...

I have had mine for over six years and still get a thrill each time I fire it up....

You'll understand.......once you own one..

The last run of Deep Candy Red was 301 cars. The sticker was right around $ 45,000. A very low mileage Deep Candy is not worth anywhere near that now.
However, putting 40,000 miles on mine so far, PRICELESS.
In this economy, investing in cars is really a crapshoot, in my opinion.
I would say get the color you like best. Drive it.

What about performance? Is the boost in horsepower ( 1999 I think) the only major change over the years?

Is this a factory color? I don't see it in the color production list.

On the main menu, there is a listing for THE PROWLER STORY.
That will answer most of your questions.

so since the dash is orange, I can assume the silver was added? This is the car i'm looking at buying. Now i'm getting suspicious about why the color change.

This is a 2000. Orange was not available in 2000 yet the dash is orange. Can't figure this one out.

The owner probably wanted to have something different than a standard production color for the car.

My Kat is Silver but I have been giving some thought to going "Two Tone" with a different color on top because I like that look.

There is a chance the car was painted as a result of something that happened or not.
I would suggest you ask the seller but I think it looks good.

Buying a Prowler or most any vehicle these days typically is not a good investment if you want to make a buck.
The car however it is a great investment in so many other ways.
The Prowler may not lose as much value as other cars and may actually maintain or increase in value but there are no guarantees.

Buy the car because you like it, will enjoy driving it and look forward to meeting other Prowler owners. Do not buy it to park and maintain for the next person to enjoy. JMO

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm thinking this must be a 2001 and the guy just doesn't know any better. Orange was available in 2001 and it has the black shocks of the 2001.I will be taking the 5 hour drive out to see this car soon and I will find out whats up with the color. I agree that it looks good. I will call it the orange bowtie edition ( dumb and dumber movie).

You can change out the dash color in less than 10 minutes.
The top of the dash and colored part are all one piece and simply pull off. He could have made a trade or had it painted. Not a big deal, at all.

Be sure to check out the "retired kat" section to run a cross check on the vin number.
http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum20/HTML/000007.html

While not a complete listing of totaled out prowlers, if the prowler your looking at has the VIN number on this list then you have saved yourself a lot of money and avoided a hugh loss.

Good luck on your search.

By the way, you have come across the MOST VALUABLE source of information available for this vehicle.

Welcome to the group.

fibertop, Check out the front shocks. In 2001 they changed to a general dynamics shock. They have a tendency to leak. I changed mine to Koni shocks, which most owners do when they start to leak. He might have changed them, but if there not Koni's, it's a 2001 model year.

If you look at the VIN, Vehicle Identification Number, you can tell what year it is.
There are 17 digits. The 12th digit from the left will be a 5 for a 1999, a 6 on 2000 models, 7 on 2001 and a 1 on 2002 models.
It is the 6th digit from the right end. That can't be changed as easily as the shocks, dashboard, etc.

Thanks Ed! Turns out the guy added the orange because he didn't like the straight silver. The guy is asking $38,000.00 CDN ( about $36,200.00 USD ) for this car. That is actually the going asking price up here for a car with 9000km (6000 miles) on it. But the market is real soft and none of them are selling at that price. We are working on a trade for a couple of seedoos and $22K. I figure the seedoos are worth about $13K to $14K which puts the price at $35K to $36K which is OK. It might be the only way I will get a kat. The car is mint.
