WHILE PUTTING GAS IN MY PROWLER TODAY SOME GUY CAME UP TO ME AND SAID I SHOULD NOT BE USING 93 OCTANE, THAT I SHOULD BE USING 87 OR 89 OCTANE. I OWNED MY PROWLER NOW FOR 8 MONTHS AND HAVE USED NOTHING BUT 93 OCTANE. HE SAID HE HAS THE SAME MOTOR IN A T-BUCKET AND NEVER USES 93. I THINK THE MANUAL SAYS 91 OCTANE.WHAT IS THE CORRECT ONE TO USE? THANKS, MEL

i use nothing but 87 octane and have never had a problem.it also depends what type/brand of gas you use.go to-toptiergas.com-it makes a difference.that cheap crap is a no no.theres one buy me and its 10 cents a gallon less, dont use it.top tier gasoline meets the goverment standards for detergents in gas and will keep your engine much cleaner inside.the reason you wont get spark knock from 87 octane is that all these later model cars including the prowler have a knock sensor on the engine which will adjust it so theres no knock.i have used 93 octane also and have noticed no change in performance from a higher octane vs lower.THIS POST BELONGS IN TECHINAL.

Catfish.....Rebel asked a legitimate question for this forum.....why are you always so tough on and blunt with people? In most cases, it's innocent people asking, needing or wanting help. Yes, sometimes ,we all need to be put in our place.....you just seem to go overboard sometimes. I know by visiting this site daily, folks have a ton of respect for you and the answers and opinions you provide them. JMO and yes I realize every ***hole has one. Bend & Flex a little more....people will respect you even more so. 'Tis the season to be jolly....Merry Christmas Jan and to ALL.

I think almost all gasoline comes from the same suppliers and there is very little difference between the brands. The additives might be a little different.
I am sure our resident gasoline genius will chime in soom. Randy, where are you ?

Good question one that has been asked before a few times & remember that the only dumb question is the one not asked

I have always put 87 octane in all my prowlers with no problem, in today's computerized engines you can Pi$$ in them and they would still run

I have no problem with your question or where you posted it. keep posting.

yes its a legit question if its posted in the correct section, thats why we have tech and performance sections also and thats where it belongs.this guy continually posts in the wrong section, if you dont like my attitude thats to bad.i think its time after 10 yrs on this site to stop answering posts.take it to the dealer and pay the 100.00 an hr fee for the info you need.if somebody cant follow the rules then go over to prowl crap and post there ,im sure you will get plenty of good info there.the question he asked is clearly not a general section question.have you pissed me off,you bet.while im pissed off, heres another one, when some people ask a question, and its lacking the info needed to give a correct responce and i ask them,a question to get more info, they dont respond back.that being the case why are they not courteous enough to respond back.as far as i 'm concerned why ask.do they really want a answer who knows.if were courteous enough to answer, then they should be courteous enough to respond back.many questions need more info, its not a cut and dried answer many times.the owner of this website would appreciate questions in the correct section.thats just the way its been for the last 10 yrs.

I'm not going to tell you my thoughts,,,,,instead,, I'm going to let MASTER Car Technician Mark Salem, tell you his. Mr. Salem has a weekly television show about auto repair, a weekly radio auto repair show, owns his own very successful auto repair business in Tempe, Az, and his articles can be seen at NASCAR.COM - http://www.nascar.com/auto/cct/

*******************************************************

Q: Super or regular unleaded?

A: First, let me make this distinction. Pre 1981 cars do not have the ability to change the timing if the engine is pinging. Cars and trucks made after 1981 have a on board computer that will see the engine pinging and retard the timing to eliminate the ping. Then the computer will try and sneak the timing up, all the time watching to see when the ping comes back. When it does, the timing is moved back a couple of degrees to eliminate the ping.

AAA says only 5 % of the cars on the road today absolutely need super unleaded and I agree. If you in doubt, try this. Have your spouse fill up your car and NOT tell you what fuel they used. Do this 3-4 times. See if you can tell the difference and / or guess which fuel they used. If you can't tell the difference, there is no difference.

I use the cheapest gas I can find in my Corvette. In tests we ran, the zero to 60 time was 1/10 of a second slower with regular when compared to super. Not much reason to pay 35-50 cents more per gallon.

Here's the difference. Regular burns fast, one molecule ignite ten and ten ignite a thousand and they ignite a million. The explosion is similar to a balloon popping. We measure the explosion in milli-seconds. Super burns slower, more like a someone letting a balloon go and fly around the room. One molecule ignites 10, 10 ignite 20, and 20 ignite 30. Now don't start writing me and telling me I'm over simplifying this, I already know it!

So super, because it burns longer, should give you more power, better performance and better mpgs. However, the difference between the two different burn times may only be .8 to 1.2 milliseconds of time and I am quite sure no one I know can feel that. Yes, we can measure that on our dyno in 0-60 mph runs and other tests, but unless you can FEEL the difference, there is no difference.

Are there any other benefits to using super,
like cleaner injectors or a cleaner engine?

No. If you use the cheapest gas you can find, you will save lots of money and when you need to replace, repair, clean your injectors, you'll have plenty of $$ to do that. I can't tell you how many times I bid injector repairs (some as high as $1300 for 6 new injectors on a V-6 Nissan) and the customer says, "But I use super, doesn't that eliminate this repair?" and of course the answer is NO.

Jan - if your mad at Broakie for trying to advise you to lighten up, fine. But why do you have to start the Ptalk site is crap stuff again. There are many us here that post on that site also. If you like some people over there, that's fine too, but don'tlump all of us into one broad "crap" statement. Have you been over there lately? I doubt it. The new owners are doing a great job and making a lot of positive changes there. On second thought, trying to read your posts here is enough, maybe I don't want you over there too!

My 2 cents

This thread was about what OCTANE to use and why. Lets try and keep it at that.

It really comes down to preference. The modern engine has a knock sensor that will retard the timing and the lower grade fuel will make the performance suffer somewhat. Will you notice? most people wouldn't.

I prefer to use Shell or BP Premium gas thinking that it might be a better fuel, MY PREFERENCE. I don't drive the car alot and the cost difference isn't going to break me. I have put regular in once when I needed fuel and they had E 85 and Regular. Did I notice a difference, NO, it it hurt my car, NO.

So use what is recommended 91 or whatever you are comfortable with

I will say this. I had a company truck that had a 350 and was to run on 87. I used Premium in it all the time and it started to run bad. Took to shop that did repairs for the company and they told me to run some cheap gas in it for a while. It started running better after a few tanks.

I always store all my cars with Premium with Stabil, (have read it does not break down as fast as regular) Don't know if it make a difference, but so far have had no fuel problems after sitting over the winter (or in the Imperial & Caddy 1 1/2 years)I also like to use SEAFOAM at least once a year (spring) to clean the fuel system.

So if you were not confused before, you should be now..........LOL
