I have talked to one Prowler owner who said they were able to widen the driver and passenger door opening distance about 8 to 10 inches from factory. Does anyone know the procedure for this. He talked about grinding something off the door hinges. It has been several months since we spoke and I can't remember the exact procedure.
Thank you, Allen

I had heard something similar when I first bought my Prowler as I thought the doors should open a bit more.... but then after driving the car a while I found it was not really necessary (for me) and have decided to leave mine stock.

The up side to having the doors open the way they come is that there is much less opportunity for your door to come in contact with the car next to you or the garage wall.

If anyone here is familiar with the method you are inquiring about, I am sure they will speak up.

Gary Knepper (MDProwler) can explain the procedure for you. He did my doors at the Fall ECP maintenance day (2008) and I am sure glad I did it. Its a lot easier to get in the kat now. It sure is a help for us old guys!

Here it is step by step. Instead of the spacer use a 5/16 SS nut or washers.

Send Jim Bell a PM, He has done ALL the Southern California cars, Jim has extra spacers for a fraction that Scott charges. Takes Jim Appox 15 minutes per door.

It's fairly easy to do. You'll be glad you did it.
Remove the side panels and you'll see two dovetail shaped pieces on each hinge. It's tricky, but these are what need to be cut off (why did they ever put them on there to start with???) I used a dremel tool and it took a while to cut through, but it works.

I used about 1/2" worth of plastic spacers (washers) from Home Depot. I loosened the door checker bolts just enough to slip them in behind. I did not completely remove the bolts since I heard the door checker could go into the door and be hard to get out (I am now not sure how true this is...) But this is the safe way.

One of the best mods to do.

Doors will open about 61/2" farther if you just do the spacers and no grinding is needed.

Kevin, Yes the metal door stop CAN go into the door, You can use a small vise grip to pull it back out, Jim Bell makes it look very easy to do.

I did not know he was the inventor of this great mod. Thanks Catfish. Maybe we can find out how he came up with this invention and when it was first performed on a Prowler.

I would also like to hear about other Prowler inventors.

howard, about 9 yrs ago,not long after buying my cat, being in the autobody business,i just happened to have my side panels off and was looking at the dr.hinge.noticed,that if i cut off part of the hinge it would open farther.took a grinder and cut off part of the stop, and got another 6.5 inches more opening.made the mistake of showing the mod to obiwan at a vegas cruise, who then turned around and tried to claim it has his.what he didnt know was that as soon as i created it,i copyrighted it with my copyright attorney.after threatening to sue him he backed off.yet, till this day he will tell you he invented it,which he didnt.i,along time ago, gave verbal permission to owners on this site to go ahead and use this mod anytime,as long as they dont try to claim it as theres.i think you could safely say, obiwan has no creditability with me at all.hes a thief, and if he doesnt like those words thats to bad.i was in the original art business forover 18 yrs,and copyrighted everything i created.
