'02 ...Wisconsin winters...never a tender... original battery. No bubbles, no heated garage (unless it drops below -20) and no 'special care' other than cleaning the terminals once/year. |

Purple '99 with the original battery and 38,000 miles....I heard that "if you don't use it,....you lose it".. So I start mine at least every few weeks when it's in storage....I think it keeps both of us "charged up" and ready to go in the Spring... Just replaced the original battery in my '99. Nine years-four months, 94,000 miles, driven too much to ever hook up a tender. Even the clock in the radio drains 25 milliamps in a 24 hour period, hence in 20 days, plus or minus, the battery could be drained, could be, with a ? mark. |

False sense of security hanging in there with old battery--REASON; old battery makes alternator work longer / harder resulting in shorter life. AL |

Original Battery still in car...2001 Black Tie 14,000 miles so clearly it sits more in the garage than on the road, which equates to long periods of time with no alternator recharge. Once in the past 6 years I had to recharge the battery due to an extended period of time the car was parked. Drain most likely occurred from parasitic electrical drain, such as clock or memory in ECU's. No battery tender has ever been used. I don't see any reason to worry about the battery until it dies one day, and then just buy another one. Sure the age of the battery does increase the risk that one day you will walk outside and the car won't start, but guess what...you can have the same problem with any battery. I had many batteries in my 40 years of driving that were 1-2 years old that just died, from one start to the next. Age of the battery does not determine it's ultimate life expectancy. Click on this link if you are interested to find out more...it is a very good website with numerous information links explaining many aspects of battery design and performance expectations. |
