Thanks all, I really mean that. Mom has been through a lot since her spinal stroke June 4 2007. She spent 5 weeks in rehab with little progress and went to skilled nursing as a paraplegic with a foley catheter. She had been battling urinary tract infections caused by the catheter ever since, but it is a necessary evil at this point. Sunday morning, the nursing home called me to tell me Mom woke having troubles breathing and her O2 level was low. They sent her to the Emergency room across the street as a precaution, and she was not responding to their treatment. (All three of these facilities are operated by St. Joseph's Hospital) I left the house and made the 45 minute drive there and by that time she was in full respiratory arrest, septic, and her kidneys were shutting down. They already had her on a ventilator and were starting her on 3 types of antibiotics to fight an infection that had spread into her blood. The 3 ER Doctors consoled me as to the fact that someone her age would not be able to overcome this, and I called the rest of the family to tell them the bad news. She was transferred to the Critical Care Unit, where they were to honor her Do Not Resuscitate wishes. She was expected to go into full cardiac arrest at any time. A lot of praying went on... She made it through the night and on Wednesday morning, the Doctor came in to tell me he was surprised to be able to say that he was removing the breathing tube. She was released from CCU late that night and taken to a room, where she was given two units of blood to replace that lost through her urine on sunday. Today, her 82nd Birthday, she was taken off all IV fluids, except for her antibiotics, and we were told tonight that her recovery has been so, in her Doctor's words, "remarkable", that she would be able to return to her room at the skilled nursing unit tomorrow, with strict observation. What a difference prayer and belief makes... Thanks to all that said a few words in their spare time, my family and my Mother thank you... TLR |
