Guys- I have a question. The long term outlook for the plastic latch part is not,in my opinion, good. I heard the original price was about $2.00 ( never verified this price but, I am inclined to believe it) The first quantity price I had was over $6.00 and has now reached nearly $9.00
with the lowest retail price at about $11.20 (not including tax and method of delivery or pick up). I believe this part can be made from a superior material and I am willing to make the mold. If I invest the up front money, will you guys help me recover my investment? These wear out! I think an aftermarket source for this part is
going to be important. Basically, I am asking if you would be willing to commit to buying one or more sets at the time I produce them to help offset the cost of producing the mold. If not, I will delay the project until the current price goes up or the part becomes unavailable. This is another "wife doesn't like it"
project, so, I need some support or this goes on hold.
NOTE- I AM NOT ASKING FOR DEPOSITS! I WANT AN ASSURANCE I CAN SELL THESE IF I MAKE THEM. PLEASE RESPOND ONLY IF YOU WILL BUY THEM WHEN THEY ARE PRODUCED! ALSO, PLEASE MAKE IT CLEAR IF YOU NEED THEM NOW!!

Art, what are you considering making them out of and what will be the approx cost?
I have to agree that in the long haul, it will be a part that will be scarce since the plastic loses some of its strength as it gets older, even if not in use.
I will buy a set or two in all probability.

Could the part be made of something more durable, like stainless steel?

I have seen different dealers' prices vary widely. Maybe look for another cheaper supplier. Just a thought as another option.

he is refering to the small plastic secondary latch for the top.

he makes the ss j hooks now and with the new mold to repo the retainer would make the replacement parts available and hopefully no one has to use a bungee cord to hold their top in the up position

I have 2 sets of the factory retainers but would buy a set if you do this project

Art,

My handle is turning white. They must not have used a material with UV protection. I would be interested.

If it's verification you're looking for, this comes pretty close (from FIVE YEARS ago):
