Looks like there will be NO Belvedere left !
Wednesday June 13, 2007 11:37am At the site downtown Wednesday morning, where crews are preparing for Friday's unearthing of a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere, it was discovered that the time capsule has been compromised by the weather over the years. NewsChannel 8's Burt Mummolo saw the damage Wednesday morning and says it is apparent that the capsule has been filled with water, not from recent rains, but by years of rain. |

It's unclear when the time capsule was compromised and it's also uncertain how much damage may have been done to the car, but at the looks of it, the vehicle is not in the pristine condition organizers had hoped. |

JMO...this should be entitled "news media ruins excitement once again" I think they should have kept this low keyed, if for no other reason than to not ruin the anticipation of so many people that have waited years for this event. If you watched the video, the spokeswoman says at the end that tarps were supposed to be up so that they could look inside in privacy, but guess someone dropped the ball there. It still is a special event for sure, but now people will be wondering how rusted it really is, rather than how pristine it is. Doesn't change the outcome if they had kept it quiet, but it is another example of how the news media can prematurely ruin an event. |

From the looks of the water lines I would not think this car will be in very good condition. Concerning rust, cars from that period never did well in good climate conditions. I will keep my fingers crossed for a miracle. This message has been edited by Roger Waring on 06-13-2007 at 03:13 PM |

Not to be negative. I believe the car will be worthless when uncovered. Not any different than if it had gone to a salvage yard and wasted away. I felt that way from the beginning but was hoping otherwise. The Prowlers will have a good time regardless! |

I sent the following feedback to channel 8....(You can do the same via the link above)....GRRRRRR..... MY E-MAIL TO CHANNEL 8: "What a bunch of jerks!....For the sake of getting the "scoop" you've ruined the anticipation of thousands who are traveling from all over the world to see this event that's been 50 years in the making....but you just couldn't wait a couple of more days could you?.....Way to go......" |

I competely understand the disappointment felt regarding the wet surprise unearthed in Tulsa. In my opinion, the news media is not to blame for spoiling the anticipation. If organizers did not want anyone to know about the contents or condition of the contents of the time capsule the hould have: 1) Not told anyone when they were going to crack the thing open Keep in mind the media was there, the officials were all there and many members of the public were there. Did they "just happen" to be at the right place at the right time? No. They were TOLD when to show up. The media was just doing what the media does (most of ther time): they were covering the news. If the idea was to keep this a surprise and not to spoil the anticipation, organizers had the responsibility. The media is to blame for lots of things these days. In my opinion, this is not one of them. Kevin |

To bad they hadn't slathered it in good old cosmoline I wonder if this is going to be one those deals where Boyd coddington will restore it in three weeks in time to sell it at a Christie's for a couple million dollars Toys This message has been edited by toys on 06-13-2007 at 08:10 PM |

I just posted this on the Viper forum... It is up to all POA members in Tulsa to FREE THE PROWLER NOW! From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plymouth_Prowler "In 1998, a Prowler prototype was buried along with other artifacts in a time capsule in Tulsa, Oklahoma to be unearthed in 2048, whereupon it will be returned to DaimlerChrysler[1]."

i would keep the car in whatever condition it's in if i won it, this is a unique once in a life time event, the car is what it is, it has survived 50 year of burial, it wouldn't be mint even if it was kept in a climate controlled enviroment after 50 years, i think it's still very cool. |

a friend of mine owns the outfit removing the car from the vault. he jumped down inside the vault and knocked on an area of the car that should have been the door. he said when he knocked on the car, it felt like solid steel. maybe it'll clean up good. |
