Since my kat is a 1997 I am on the leading edge of repairs and guess what... the tire pressure sensors batteries are going bad. It is super annoying because the the low tire pressure light is on and pings every 5 seconds even though all the tire pressures are perfect. I need to either replace the batteries or sensors. But before I do anything I have a few questions: 1. How can I tell which sensor is bad or has a low battery? Can I use a OBD2 computer to extract a code? Is there a code for a bad tire pressure sensors? If so what are the codes? 2. How much are replacement sensors? Sensors should cost like $5-10 since they are on all 2006+ cars. 3. Can I easily disconnect the low tire pressure system/light? If so how? ------------------ Brian K. Richardson West Palm Beach, FL http://www.brianrichardson.net

What is the battery P/N or size for the Tire Pressure sensors. The local Goodyear store said they would replace the batteries on the tire pressure sensors, but I need to provide the batteries. This message has been edited by spoons on 04-03-2007 at 02:53 PM |

I have mine off the rims Brian and I can't find a spot to crack them open to replace the batteries. They looked like they are sealed up pretty good. Brian |

1. Batteries are not replaceable. A DRB3 tool is needed, OBDII won't do it.2. $170 each last I checked. I'd be interested after you replace it if you'd take it apart and test the battery. I've had multiple sensors go bad, with the same symptoms as yours, and it was within the first couple of years. Given all of the mechanical components in the sensor, there's a lot that can go wrong. Sounds like it's time to revisit a post that I made some time ago: http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/002912.html quote: Originally posted by GRROWL:Short answer: "If it's working, don't fix it." With the infant-mortality that I suffered when the car was new on multiple sensors, you might be getting into a worse situation than you are in now. MAKE SURE THE OLD SENSORS GO INTO THE OLD LOCATIONS or else you will need to have them reprogrammed for the changed locations. The long answer: LET’S TRY TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE ONCE AND FOR ALL. Take a look at: http://schrader-bridgeport.com/brochure.cfm?brochure=5182&location_id=4816 Description includes: “. . . . programming and diagnostic tool for properly servicing TPMS equipped vehicles . . . .Retrievable data includes tire pressure, temperature, BATTERY CONDITION and OE part number. The LED display also provides this same information on a scroll display.’ Yes, our pressure sensors were made by Schrader-Bridgeport and they consider our cars to use their TPMS system. The 21211 tool indicates that it checks battery condition. The only question is, “Will this work on OLDER TPMS systems?” The new availability of these tools is probably due to the requirement for tire pressure monitoring on all cars in the near future, and I don’t know if it’s backwards compatible to ours (the language below seems to indicate that it is), but if this works, it could be the answer to our problem. With one (or several) of these tools (21211) within the prowler-owner system available on a shareable/rentable/Regional/pass-around-saleable basis, this could be the solution to maintaining all of our pressure sensor systems. Who wants to dig into this? http://schrader-bridgeport.com (surf around TPMS) productsales@Schrader-Bridgeport.com (responsive to questions in the past) Here's a description of the 2 tools (we'd need the 21211 for battery condition): Schrader® Electronic TPMS Tools The Schrader® AirAware™ 21210 learn and test tool is an indispensable programming and diagnostic tool for properly servicing TPMS equipped vehicles. This multi-function tool: • Activates the in-wheel sensors to begin transmitting data • Programs vehicle electronic control modules (ECM) to learn the positions of sensors in wheels whenever single or multiple sensors are replaced or when tires and wheels are rotated • Intercepts sensor data for testing and programming The Schrader learn and test tool is designed to work with sensors for most vehicles sold in North America. The Schrader 21210 tool: • Decodes sensor data and provides visual response to ensure sensors are functioning properly • Activates sensors using 125 kHz continuous or modulated wave signals • Receives both 315 MHz and 433.92 MHz signals • Cannot be fooled by other RF signals • Outputs sensor data to a PC via USB port to print reports • Allows for faster activations and diagnostics with pre-selection process • Can be programmed via USB connection • Includes free software upgrades • Is lightweight (10.6 oz) and compact (6”x2.25”x1.25”) The Schrader 21210 tool kit includes: • 21210 universal learn and test tool • Hard plastic case • One USB cable • Magnet (necessary to activate some sensors) • Protective rubber boot • User guide and table • One 9-volt battery The Schrader® AirAware™ 21211 learn and test plus tool offers all of the unique time saving features of the 21210 tool, but with these significant advantages: • Audit feature • Designed to work on all sensors • LED display for compact and clear visual output • Full sensor data display including replacement part number • Tool battery gage indicator • Will store up to 10 TPMS records Because the 21211 is lightweight and compact, it fits in your shirt pocket. Do not let the size and weight fool you; it is very durable and rugged. This tool has been drop tested at distances exceeding 4 feet and the base design has been approved for OE dealership use. The audit feature allows the tool to act as a memory stick when plugged into a computer. Once plugged into the USB port, TPM sensor data can be retrieved and printed as a report. This is a huge advantage since this tool decodes the data, making the audit feature possible. Retrievable data includes tire pressure, temperature, battery condition and OE part number. The LED display also provides this same information on a scroll display. The 21211 is upgradeable for free to registered tool owners via Schrader’s tool website. The Schrader 21211 will work on all sensors and is packaged as a complete kit, including instructions, magnet, molded case and mini-USB cable. CAUTION: Always use new grommets, nuts, valve caps and valve cores when performing any tire service. Use new nickel-plated electroless valve cores with aluminum valve stems. Refer to manufacturer’s specifications for proper torque requirements when replacing nuts and valve cores. [/B]

I know I am going senile, but I swear one of our members was working a deal with a large tire frachise company to stock NEW tire sensors. This post was within the last 3 months. I think the cost was around a 'C' note each. |

Thank You Kat Hunter! If Howard is still following this post, did the deal ever go through? And can we get them from any store or just one specific one? |
