Well, my Prowler has been back at the dealer THREE times in 4 months because of the "check engine" light being on. It's a 2002 silver cat and I have about 18k miles on it. Each time it's been a different vacuum hose leak. This time they told me that after inspecting it thoroughly that ALL the vacuum hoses are brittle like glass and need to be replaced!!!! They had to order them in and I'll have to take it back in next week when all the hoses get there. Isn't that crazy? I bought the car in Nov. of 2002 and in a little over 3 years and with less than 20,000 miles...all the vacuum hoses are breaking!!!! Talk about horrible quality control!!! On a brighter note...before I took it in I ordered some Akebono ceramic brake pads for my front wheels and had them install them for me while it was there. FINALLY I will be able to have shiny chrome wheels instead of nasty "black soot" wheels. |

I'll admit that I haven't seen the car and may not know all of the details but,,, Parts changers are easy to find, a knowledgable mechanic seems to be a rarity nowadays. I don't know about them having to cover their butts...My car is under full warranty, and it doesn't cost me a thin dime to take it in there so if that is the case they are only wasting their own time and money. What they told me was that everytime they replace one hose...another one blows. They said all the hoses were brittle...Does sound weird..hell, I finally changed a couple of hoses on my 1973 MG Midget. I didn't have to but I thought I would just for the heck of it. I figured they'd been on there for 33 years and could use changing even though they were fine. But I guess my Prowlers' hoses couldn't make it 3 years. I know that sounds crazy...but my hood shocks didn't make it 2 years, and don't get me started on the various little electrical glitches and of course the ball joint issue... |

Hood shocks are a known problem. Our Cat is 7 years old, actually it's pushing 8 years if you count the date of manufacture. Have not has any hose problems. I have not heard of any before either. This message has been edited by BeWare on 03-22-2006 at 01:19 PM |

I would go out and take a hose off the car and see if it is brittle. If it is not, you know they are jacking you around for some reason. I never heard of another Prowler with hose problems. |

Just hope the dealership has some great mechanics. I would visually check and photo all hoses, so when you get the car back you can make sure they are routed in the correct position. |

i dont think they have the slightest idea of the problem.mines going on 7 yrs old.this is in az.120 in the summertime and no dried out hoses or lines.take it to a different dealer.i wouldnt trust them.if your lite is on, ask them what code they retrieved and post it.we should be able to tell you what the code means. ------------------ |

I will ask them that. That's sort of what the point of my post is: to find out if any other Prowler owners had this problem. Or maybe if it was a problem inherent in the 2002 model year. I've never heard of hoses going bad this quickly either. But when it comes to any car made in the last 20 years..I'm not so good. Give me a car with a "real" distributor and a "real" carb and no computer chips and I'm fine. But all these new cars with their chips and "engine lights" leave me scratching my head. LOL! I do know this much...Engine light came on about 4 months ago. They ran their tests and determined it was a vacuum hose. They replaced it. A month or so later the engine light came on again. They ran their tests and concluded that it was a different vacuum hose that time. So they replaced it. A couple of months went by (this incident) and my engine light came on at the end of last week. I took it in and that's when they told me that another vacuum hose had went bad. They said that under further inspection that several of the ones that run around the back and the gas tank were also brittle and wouldn't last much longer. So that's the detailed version of the story. They called me on Thursday and said the hoses were in so I dropped it off in the afternoon and I'm picking it up Friday morning. Hopefully that will be the end of that story. Thanks guys! |
