So, in '97 the engine had a lower horsepower than the '99. I have noticed that some '99's have the alloy wheels like the '97 and some have the chrome. So my question is this... If a '99 has the '97 alloy wheels, would it also have the lower horsepower engine, or do ALL '99s have the higher horsepower engine regardless of wheel? Thank you.

Chrome wheels were an option in 99. The horesepower in 99 is 253 HP no matter what wheel is on the cat.

A little further clarification? (Hope I'm not stepping in here??):

The horsepower part of the reply is entirely correct.

The statement that "chrome wheels were an option" is kind wiggely. In other words..if you have black or red 99 with painted wheels you will have for sure have been "re-gifted" with wheels that were not an "option" and did not come with the car.

Somewhere in Fall of 98' DC discontinued the painted silver wheels (Purple production) and equiped ALL CARS (from that date forward) with chrome with but described them as a $1,000 Chrome Wheel Option.

Hope this helps? Heck, it confuses me even a little bit?

I am pretty sure that some yellow 99s came with the painted wheels. All 97s had painted and most of the 99 purples had painted. On the window sticker it said chrome was an option, but it wasn't in reality.

Well, I was wanting the 99, and I was wanting the silver wheels. So, I liked the look of 97 with the extra HP of 99. I found a dealer in AZ with just such an animal it seems. I haven't gotten the VIN yet to check it to make sure it's not a 97, but I just wanted some clarification before I got my hopes up. Thanks.

Proceed with caution!!!

Get VIN# and get a complete CARFAX report on this cat,,,,and even that isn't always enough. I was looking at a '04 Mustang GT convert last month. CARFAX showed no accidents/body shop work reported. When I went over this car with a Lucid Eye,,,,,,,it had been hit in the front and along the driver's side all the way back.

The chrome wheels started on the Black 99's in the fall of 98. 20 Yellows built in the late winter early spring 99 had chrome.

Ray is correct about the sticker showing $1,000 option for the chrome, BUT these cars could not be ordered and once the silver wheels were gone they all had chrome wheels.

Mine was built in June of 98 and had silver wheels. I sent mine out to be chromed in Nov. of 98

I believe all cars built starting in Feb. of 98 were titled as 99's and had the all aluminum block (253HP) the 97's were built from July 97 to Feb. 98 and have steel block and about 214HP.

In looking for a car get the color you want, if there is a certain look you are going for either change it to look the way you want or find the car with that on it.

I know of a black car that was sold new with chrome wheels, 1st owner bought it and removed the chrome wheels to put on his early 99 Yellow and sold the black with silver wheels. When ask about the silver wheels on the black he told the buyer that this car had silver but failed to tell him he took the chrome off.

Good Luck on your search

My opinion is the chrome wheels make the car STAND OUT. Go to an event and see 100 cars with shining chrome wheels glistening in the sun driving down the road PRICELESS
