A red Prowler with silver wheels. I wonder if it came from the factory this way.

Wasn't red an all-year 99 color, with silver wheels on the early 99's? Sounds like a proper combination.

I think the chrome wheels were an early option in '99. I have seen purple and yellow with silver wheels.

That one has a vin ending in 4xxx, mine is black with vin ending 2112 and has chrome wheels.

The "Prowler Story" says that all 99 reds would have chrome wheels (chrome wheels became standard in September 98, red was introduced in February 99). However, that doesn't agree with what has been reported on this board that chrome became standard on the late 99's. Yes, there is a real question here.

-GRROWL

Back for an Edit. The "Prowler Story" is inconsistent. It also states that chrome wheels became standard in August 99, which would make red with silver wheels factory-correct. This is consistent with what has been reported on the board.

I remember seeing a brochure once that showed a red and yellow cat w/silver wheels and stating that the chrome wheels were a $1500 option. May have had 'some' reds and yellows already painted before the chrome wheels had arrived at CAAP???

The Black car got the chrome wheels 1st

I do know a guy that had an early yellow 99 (20 late 99 yellows had chrome wheels) and bought a black one with chrome wheels. He switched the wheels and sold the black car.

The guy that bought the black car questioned the silver wheels but was satisfied with the answer "this one has silver". He was not told they didn't come from the factory with silver.

My guess the same thing happened with this one. Either the dealer had 2 cars and a buyer wanted the chrome wheels on a Yellow or Purple and the dealer switched them or they were replaced the chrome due to peeling/pitting or someone owned two and switched them

my car had the painted wheels from the factory and it still has the same wheels it left the factory with on it

The Reds were the start of the 2000 model year and I believe even though it was stated as an option the chrome wheels were what were on all the 2000 cars.

The Yellow paint on my car was optional at $1,000 extra, SO THAT MAKES THEM BETTER THAN THE purple..hehehehe

I believe that we're making this more complicated than we need to (regarding 2000 MY). Unless there is contrary information, I believe the following to be true:

ALL 2000's came with chrome wheels
ALL 2000 single colors were the same price
(the Woodward 2-tone was extra cost).

-GRROWL

P.S. - Does it help that someone once posted to the effect, "even though chrome wheels were listed as an option in '99, after a certain point, the '99's all came with chrome wheels from the factory".

Chrome where an option on 99 Purple and Yellow. I have always been under the impression that all red and black 99's came standard with chrome wheels. I'm just saying that I have seen about as many other Prowlers (with exception of a very select few) as anyone else and I have never seen a red 99 Prowler (or black for that matter) with silver wheels. I would really like to get to the bottom of this because my 1/24 Prowler diecast collection might not be as complete as I thought it was. CJ, is there any way find out if any 99 reds or blacks were built with silver wheels?

Good eye. You are right they are not stock. Only 15,000 miles on the car. I suspect the previous owner may have to switched to painted wheels.

99 yelo....silver/a few chrome
99 black....all chrome

In 1999, any color other than purple was a $1,000 option (yellow, black and red). The chrome wheels were optional in 1999. It's conceivable that a handful of 99 reds were built with painted wheels. There were some black that were built with silver wheels. For 2000, the chrome wheels became standard and the pricing for the optional paint (for the car) was rolled into the base price. Bob was on the pricing work team for Prowler that made these decisions.

CJ ... I would beg to differ as my Kat was a '99 early car and yes, later they "optioned" chrome wheels, btu that meant that ALL cars had chrome ... I find it funny that DC used the word "option" for both the paint and the wheels. My yellow was "optional", but heck, one would have been hard pressed to order a Kat.

I believe that this red has replacement wheels and tires and that ALL Red Kats came with chrome wheels. Someone else here sumed it up, a dealer may have done a switch-a-roo and gave up chrome wheels on another color perhaps an the Red got the hand me downs.

Black came out before the red. My Red was built in March of 99 and it came with chrome wheels, $ 1000 option for the red paint and $ 1000 option for the chrome wheels.
There seems to be some mass confusion here about chrome being standard on 2000 but not 99. They did not give you a choice. You got chrome and the $ 1000 add on charge. I doubt if they still used silver after they started using chrome, but I do not know that for a fact.
Thanks for sticking up for me Blubyu. lol
