I have only been a member for a short time, but already I can tell it is tough to "keep up with the Jones". I have a CDJ dealership, and just received my first srt-10 quad cab which is equiped with a red button on the dash that says "start engine". On the steering column, the key goes in but there are only two positions off and on. In the on position, the accessories all work, but the vehicle does not start until you press the red button. So, naturally I was thinking about putting a start button on my 99Kat. Has anyone see this on another kat? I think I only remember seeing it on a honda (s2000????) and maybe a kit or two. Mechanically, I don't think it would be too difficult, but I don't know how it would look cometically? Anyone have pics? |

When I had a miata, I contemplated doing the same thing. Some people on the miataforums.net website did this mod for releatively low cost. |

That would be awesome ..........I know that Obi Wan is working on a F1-style shifting conversion for the Prowler right now, he would be the one to ask IMO. I like the idea !! |

The only really cool "start" button system is the one in the Audi A8 12 cylinder, the European Touareg and VW Phaeton, and the Bimmer 7 series. In these systems, you have a key fob which unlocks the car automatically as you approach it, then signals an ECU that you have entered the car. You NEVER have to take the key fob out of your pocket! Simply push the "start" button and off you go. Once you reach your destination, press the button to shut off the engine. Then simply get out of the car...as you walk away the car automatically locks the doors and sets the alarm. Any system where you have to still insert the key, and then press the button, is for "show" only as far as I can see, and doesn't appeal much to me. JMO |

I agree with prowlrman that a button would just be for show, but isn't that why we all do our mods? I would love to have a start button, just something else to show my friends. Just a bit more of the KOOL factor. ------------------ |

Rickster, No, I wasn't but I definitely drove several of those, also. We used to take a half-dollar (anybody remember them?) and put it on three bolts behind the dash, holding the ignition to the dash, then hit the start button, and start my buddy's mom's '48 Plymouth. You had to keep the half dollar on the bolts to keep the car running. It would have been easier to use wires but we usually had a 50 cent peice in our pocket. The floor starters had a pretty strong spring so you had to do some real pushing on them. Thanks for reminding me. |

Ed, Remember the Buicks with the starter in the accelorater pedal? Turn the ignition on then mash the gas pedal to the floor? |

Like Ed [and God do I hate to admit this] I drove many cars/trucks with the starter push switch on the floor Ed and I go way back,,,,,to vacuum windshield wipers, no turn signals [actually had to hand signal out the window], mechanical clocks, 6 volt batteries, no seat belts, and a AM radio if you were lucky. Speaking of lucky,,,,it was in the back seat of that '49 Ford,,,,,,,,nevermind, lol. |

Here's a pic of an add-on starter in a Mazda Miata (it replaced the cigarette lighter): This message has been edited by Orange on 12-14-2004 at 09:29 PM |

A/C, how about vaccum shift on the tranny? Now you can hardly find a car without power windows or A/C. That was unheard of in the early 50s. But we did have cozy wings and vents to open when it was 100 degrees and humid. Ah, the good old days. |

I had a '53 Mercedes 300SE that had a starter switch on the dash. But what I really miss is the dimmer switch on the floor. Now my left foot just sits there with nothing to do. |

TUIB 'fraid that won't work in the Prowler. If I started left footed toe tappin' with all that room down there I'd be dangerous. Now if I'm drivin' my Caddy I let my left foot go over to the spa for a pedicure. I tell ya that Caddy's got everything. |

Tangled - I had a '55 chevy also,,,,red, 2dr HT, 270hp Corvette motor. Always in the shop for repairs, kept me broke, and turned me off on Chevy products for along time. But, the wipers did work, lol. I miss the floor dimmer switch for the headlights also. My left foot needs more work. |

Just go to your local tractor or Peterbuilt dealership and their parts department sells that kind of stuff over the counter every day, and the buttons are cool looking. or better yet get a nascar type with a flip cover and toggle switch that os spring loaded back to the disengaguged postion. Did you know that the fedral safety commision has a bill to retrofit all cars with floor dimmer switchs? they claim blonds keep getting their left foot caught in the steering wheel when useing bright lights. block-buster ------------------ |

My wife had a 59' Bug Eye Sprite that had the starter button and My 33' Ford Pickup has one, the last owner put it in. should really have the foot starter. My only question is Why on earth would you want to install one on the Prowler? |
