After a ANOTHER desparate race down the mountain. Chromer and Jack make it (just barely..it was in limp mode..spitting a farting) to Ryan and Ann Brinkman's house for ANOTHER set of belts.

Thanks Ryan and Ann for your help and hospitality...you gave me a good feeling about what Prowler clubing should be about.

Jack is getting more than a little tired of this fire drill.
I tried to get Jack to do some wrenching but he talked Ryan into doing it for him.

Jan...thanks for your note. I'll definately have to get a belt tensioner (and will be caring an extra set of belts). The belts seem REALLY tight. This is the third set of belts in less than 1,200 miles. I got to believe it might be something in addition to that? Maybe replace the tensioner pullys?

I agree that the AC belt is taking out the poly cog belt. The manuel says the belt will "roll" if it's either too tight or too loose .

What happened to the good old days when you'd just take a tire iron and pry on the side of the "generator" and snug a bolt and forget it about it??

Generator/Power steering belt - new 190 lbs - Used 150 lbs..

AC belt - new 190 lbs - Used 150 lbs.

WOW!! that's some kind of tension!! Thanks for researching Laddie. This sounds like what the jouneyman used to tell when I was an apprentice pipefitter: "Get it as tight as you can..then go one more round"..

Hi Jan,

Unable to locate a belt torque tool. I checked the tensioin the new AC belt today. I noticed the AC belt adjuster nut
has just 3/8" or maybe 1/2" of ajustment left before it bottoms (max's) out. If you or anyone else is under there car..please check (stick a finger in there) and tell me about how much adjustment you (after having it properly tensioned) have left on your AC belt tensioner. I know this isn't scientific...but maybe I'll be in the ball park?

Picked it up today, it's a very compact "pencil gauge" with a pocket clip.

I was able to squeeze my hand behind the radiator support and take a reading of the serpentine belt on the driver's side, which measured at 100# (specs call for 150). I didn't want to overtighten it blindly, so that's about where I figured. Can't take a picture of it on the car, but here's an amazing simulation:

The red pen top represents your finger that is held in place with the elastic loop and pushes down on the spring-loaded pressure plate until it clicks. You can see this better with the sideview:

The black plastic finger on the lower left moves the pointer on the top that reads the belt deflection at the calibrated setting of the finger click. It does hold the reading as you move the gauge, so you don't have to see it in place to read it.

It looks like it will work pretty well. I'll try it over the weekend - I plan to drive GRROWL up on ramps and check both belts from below.
