Stop in Rollinsville Colorado just before the belts went "South".

After a ANOTHER desparate race down the mountain. Chromer and Jack make it (just barely..it was in limp mode..spitting a farting) to Ryan and Ann Brinkman's house for ANOTHER set of belts.

Thanks Ryan and Ann for your help and hospitality...you gave me a good feeling about what Prowler clubing should be about.

Prowlers SUCK!!

the reason the belt gets thrown is its not tight enough, check yours.use a belt tension guage.i dont have my manual, somebody is using it.some body else can give you the specs.if its not tightened to specs,it will throw a/c belt, which wipes out the serpentine belt.and usually ruins both.good luck.

CJ-AC..

Jack is getting more than a little tired of this fire drill.
I tried to get Jack to do some wrenching but he talked Ryan into doing it for him.

Jan...thanks for your note. I'll definately have to get a belt tensioner (and will be caring an extra set of belts). The belts seem REALLY tight. This is the third set of belts in less than 1,200 miles. I got to believe it might be something in addition to that? Maybe replace the tensioner pullys?

I agree that the AC belt is taking out the poly cog belt. The manuel says the belt will "roll" if it's either too tight or too loose .

What happened to the good old days when you'd just take a tire iron and pry on the side of the "generator" and snug a bolt and forget it about it??

some dealers have the tensioner.i think you can only buy it, from miller tools, and they take forever.find a dealer you can trust and if they have one ,have them tighten to specs.i had the same problem, belts coming off, 2 times after dealer worked on it,ill give you 1 guess as to which one.emd.had to tell them manual says to use belt tensioner and tighten to specs.after they did that never had another problem.some body may tell you its a bent pulley or bent brkt.not.i dont have my manual, somebody please post specs.emd after saying pulley bent, replaced and threw again.next it was brkt bent.threw again, tightened to specs no problem.good luck.the days of 3/4 inch play are gone,at least on prowlers.you wont believe how tight the a/c belt has to be,approx at least 150 ft.lbs or more.ck.to be sure.no play at all.

Talk to Rich - Radkat - about his. Seems that when they installed the Paxton, the pullies didn't line back up. That was why he was throwing his I think.

Chromer - I understand your frustration. After getting my first engine rebuilt my car threw the belts three times and as others have posted - the engine builder and the dealer (twice) did not do it according to the book. Also the pulleys were not aligned the first time.

Don't blame the car - it's just a machine. It's the humans that work on it that make mistakes.

Hope you get it corrected and get back to cruising soon.

Radcat...checked all the pullys...no wobble..no siezing.

If I had a super charger it would certainly be included on the modifications crawler below my bannner. No SC here.

WOW!! that's some kind of tension!! Thanks for researching Laddie. This sounds like what the jouneyman used to tell when I was an apprentice pipefitter: "Get it as tight as you can..then go one more round"..

The Cooling Special Tool for Belt tension is:

Belt Tension Gauge 7198.

When installing a new replacement belt, the instructions require a five minute run-in & than readjust tension to new belt specs...

Hi Jan,

Unable to locate a belt torque tool. I checked the tensioin the new AC belt today. I noticed the AC belt adjuster nut
has just 3/8" or maybe 1/2" of ajustment left before it bottoms (max's) out. If you or anyone else is under there car..please check (stick a finger in there) and tell me about how much adjustment you (after having it properly tensioned) have left on your AC belt tensioner. I know this isn't scientific...but maybe I'll be in the ball park?

Thanks,
JWD and Chromer

I'll be interested to know more. On the bright side...Jack and I made it home today (8.29) WITHOUT calling a tow truck. We made it more than 78 miles without Belt faiures !!

Picked it up today, it's a very compact "pencil gauge" with a pocket clip.

I was able to squeeze my hand behind the radiator support and take a reading of the serpentine belt on the driver's side, which measured at 100# (specs call for 150). I didn't want to overtighten it blindly, so that's about where I figured. Can't take a picture of it on the car, but here's an amazing simulation:

The red pen top represents your finger that is held in place with the elastic loop and pushes down on the spring-loaded pressure plate until it clicks. You can see this better with the sideview:

The black plastic finger on the lower left moves the pointer on the top that reads the belt deflection at the calibrated setting of the finger click. It does hold the reading as you move the gauge, so you don't have to see it in place to read it.

It looks like it will work pretty well. I'll try it over the weekend - I plan to drive GRROWL up on ramps and check both belts from below.

Purchased from Advance Auto as Special Order Item # 80010249 for $41.88 and it came in a box marked J-38931.

Growl, thanks for the follow up on the belt tension gauge. Great photos and good directions. Please post after you get under your car and check the belt tension. Don't forget to check how much adjustment is left on the AC tensioner bolt so I can get an idea.
Curious to get your impression of the usefulness accuracy and quality of the $41 tool after you fully use it?
