We have owned this Prowler over 5 years and just today at a car show with 7 other Prowlers, I notice for the first time the engine block on our 99 Purple is painted black. All the others had a natural aluminum unpainted block, including two 99 Reds Prowlers. Ours was built August 98. So now I am curious when was your Prowler built and what color is the block? Or I guess the better question is. is the block painted or unpainted? I am pretty sure the 97 will be painted because they use a cast iron engine block. Maybe on the early 99's they painted them and then realized they could save money and / or time by not painting the aluminum engine blocks. Maybe only purple Prowlers have painted blocks. Anyway I am very curious. These are the areas I was speaking of; All the other 7 or 8 Kats at the show were unpainted natural Aluminum

Without looking (and I'm not going to the garage at 1:50 a.m) I'm not sure about the 99 Black, but the 02 Candy is black (I know 'cause I just cleaned under the hood). |

Strange. Lethia's orange '01 has the hood up, and its aluminum. The silver '00 cat has a cover over it, so I'll check tomorrow. CJ - was/is the 3.5L engine built at one facility only? |

Hi Rich, I just checked my 1999 engine block and it's not painted. It's hard to see down in there, even with a good flashlight, but the block, pan, etc..all appears to be plain aluminum in color. JWD and Chromer. |

Just to clarify don't look at the front of the engine because it has an aluminum cover. Look on the sides under the plenum. Best place to check is around the oil filler. This is getting more curious. |

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but from looking UP from underneath, it all appears aluminum until beyond the mufflers--and from here back--the frame (& not the block--natch) appears to be bronze! That was startling as my car is Tomato RED! Is 'bronze' the norm? TIA, Ty-K |

I believe there is some confusion between the color of the valve covers and the color of the block, lower intake manifold and heads. I've noticed this before, but went out to check it anyway. Both my 99 yellow and 99 black have black valve covers and natural aluminum blocks heads and lower intake manifolds. All 3.5 Prowler engines 99-02 have a semi gloss black cover in front covering the timing belt. I would be curious to see pictures of a natural black block on a Prolwer. ------------------ |

I will yake a picture tomorrow to demonstrate the area I am speaking of. I am not talking about the fron to the engine. It may be the heads I am looking at, but whatever it is they are painted black where all the others were unpainted aluminum. |
