I use the highest octane I can get at the pumps. Here in Calif. that's 91 octane.

Hi and welcome.
I am also pretty new and have found the people on this site can help with anything. I use the 93, dont see the 91 offered nearly at all anymore.

That is sad, mxk...

I grew up in Cally but been gone a l-o-n-g time. I get 93.5 at ENTEC here in Bama (supposedly the best gas on the planet--but who really knows?) And, relatively cheap [here] at appx $2 bucks a gallon...only appx $1.70 for 87

Stopped at a Sunoco this weekend, noticed this pump off to the side....assumed it was Kerosene, NOT it was 110 octane!
Over 5 bucks a gallon, going to have to try some of it!

I've always been told the only reason for octane ratings is for anti knock.

Theoretically, if you run 87 and your engine doesn't knock, you're OK? .....but I wouldn't recommend it for any reason. On the other side, putting 93 octane in a car that requires 87 is a waste of money.

Our octanes run 89, 91 and 93 I think around here. (or is it 87, 89, and 91?)

I ALWAYS got premium regardless of whether I'm wasting money or not. Just habit.

Black Tie 161,

Have you also heard the higher the octane the better gas mileage you will get? I have heard this--and it seems to be true regarding motorcycles I've ridden, but dunno if it holds true for Prowlers-maybe some of us should experiment
and see if we get significant differences--either way!

There's a few members here who have many years in the oil/ gas industry and could probably give a solid answer to that.

Better mileage seems to depend more on engine temps...an engine running on a 180 degree thermostat will get better mileage than with a 160 thermostat. But the 160 thermostat will produce more power.

To get good mileage you need to keep the foot off the gas pedal, which is hard to do in this car...

Was wondering has anyone used the 110 racing fuel? will it hurt the aluminum engine as far as heat or temp?
I also have been tempted to try a half & half mix to see what kind of performance the car would get.

In Moddersville we only offer 87 octane I've tried 93 but my mileage is better on 87.All 93 does is cost more.

I've been running a mix of 93 and 100--50/50 The 100 is unleaded--I think the 110 is leaded...

I almost always use the highest octane available but we have a few Sunoco stations that carry 5, 6 or 7 grades so I don't go for the top one there.

I use 87-89 octane. Have tried 91-93 to see if it improves mileage or performance. It does neither and runs just fine on regular. I have never experienced any pinging or other detrimental issues. Premium appears to just be a waste of money.

Many of you know from past posts I'm in the gas/oil biz and have been all my adult life.

My advice would be to run whatever octane fuel that makes you comfortable. There are valid arguments to made for lower octane (runs good, cheaper) and higher octane (not much more, preceived better quality). Each owner has to make that decision individually.

IN MY OPINION, 87 octane is all that is needed for the Prowler engine to perform OK in usual diving conditions other than racing or if you have significant engine modifications. When it comes down to it the engine is the 3.5L that Chrysler put in other production cars. You Viper owners probably do need 93.

Why is higher octanes pushed so hard. Marketing. Again, in MY PERSONAL opinion it's because the refiners, suppliers, distributors, retailers (all in the distribution chain) simply make more money on the higher octanes than they do on base unleaded! 87 octane is often sold at or near cost, with the hopes of making money on higher octanes and on the Twinkies, etc. sold in the store.

What do I do? I filled my Tahoe up yesterday with 87 octane, I filled my wife's Mercedes SUV up this morning with 93 octane simply because it is going in for the emissions test today (typically 1 tank 93, next tank 87)and hers does seem to not run as good in summer months on lower octane (possibly due to lower vapor pressure in summer gas). I fill my Prowler up most of the time at one of our BP stations near our home and I usually get 93. I usually do this even though it runs fine on 87 for two selfish reasons.
#1. I'm in the biz and I run personal fuel usage through the company. A cobbler doesn't pay for his own shoe repairs, a mason for his own brick work.
#2. My neighbors see me pumping 87, they just might start doing the same and I need the extra cash of premium sales to support my Prowler addiction!

Just my opinion and I'm being as honest and stand-up as I can be.

Generally use 89 Octane (Mid-grade)and once a month fill up with 91 Octane. On trips I see no difference in MPG but between each fillup I sure my driving changes enongh to change the MPG also. I generally average 21.5-23.5 overall in the last three years. I agree with Kraut also...
