Just had a very interesting conversation with Ken at the Prowlers Hot Rod Club here in San Diego. This club has been around for 57 years and is the oldest in the country. On their website www.prowlers.org is an interesting article that claims DC got the name of the Prowler from their club. http://www.prowlers.org/contentpage.asp?ContentID=105 According to this article, the Prowler was to be built with a power top and cost in the $20K range. According to Ken, one of their members has rented a Prowler once. I will be taking my Kat to their annual show at Simpson's Nursery in Jamul on the 27th. Has anyone heard this story about where the Prowler name came from? |

The annual Prowler gathering is this Sunday in Jamul, CA. If you can make it, there will be an area set up just for Prowlers. http://www.prowlers.org/uploads/prowler_simpsons_flyer.pdf Here is a pic from last years show. See you there!

After reading the story, the Prowlers didn't seem to like the car very much...Dick said, "The only thing they got right was the Prowler name and color from my club plaque." Eh, screw-em.... |

I don't think that the claim that DC got the name from their club is accurate. I do think that a power top was considered, but the 20k range would not have been financially feasible. The car was introduced at $39,000 plus tax and freight. Bob Lutz was adamant that the price would be under 40k in spite of what the financial people at DC wanted. |
